Royal Melbourne Dress Code and Etiquette
Royal Melbourne is the jewel of the Sandbelt and a club that takes its standards seriously. The rule is a collared shirt tucked in, tailored trousers or shorts, golf shoes with soft spikes, and no denim, and this is a walking club where carts are for medical need only. Here is exactly what to wear, what is banned, and the etiquette of the world's great heath land golf.

The short answer
Royal Melbourne asks every member, visitor and guest for a standard of dress in keeping with the character and standing of the club, and it means it. On the course, men wear tailored trousers, plus fours or tailored shorts with a collared shirt that is neat and tucked in, plus golf shoes with soft spikes and short socks that are predominantly white or complement the rest of the outfit. Women wear neat slacks, tailored shorts or skirts with a collared shirt tucked in, on the same footwear standard. A golf polo and tailored trousers will see you welcome anywhere on the property.
What is not permitted is a clear list: denim, tracksuits, football or rugby jumpers, golf hoodies, sweatshirts, cargo and draw string trousers or shorts, trousers tucked into socks, and any clothing carrying writing or advertising beyond a small badge or logo. Shoes not designed for golf are out, the club is entirely smoke free including e-cigarettes, and it prefers visible tattoos to be covered on the course and in the clubhouse. Everything below was checked in June 2026 against Royal Melbourne's published regulations and is indicative, so always confirm the current dress code and visitor arrangements directly with the club before you travel.
The Royal Melbourne dress code, item by item

What to wear, and what to leave at home
The safe Royal Melbourne outfit is a golf polo tucked into tailored trousers, with a light layer for the wind that funnels across the open heath. In summer tailored shorts with predominantly white socks are entirely correct, but Melbourne weather is famously changeable and a four seasons day is real, so a windproof and a thin waterproof belong in the bag whatever the morning looks like. Soft spiked golf shoes are required, and a spare clean shirt is worth carrying if you plan to stay for lunch in the clubhouse after the round.
What gets visitors stopped is the same short list every time: denim, a sweatshirt or golf hoodie, a replica football jumper, cargo or draw string shorts, or shoes that are not golf shoes. Leave them at the hotel and pack golf specific clothing. The club also prefers visible tattoos covered and removes caps in the clubhouse, small courtesies that matter at a club of this standing, and it is smoke free across the entire property, so there is no smoking or vaping on the course, in the car park or around the clubhouse.
Etiquette on the Sandbelt
Royal Melbourne's West Course, the Alister Mackenzie masterpiece routinely ranked the finest course in Australia and among the best in the world, is designed to be walked, with tees set close to greens, and the club says plainly that golf is a game best played walking. Respecting that, and the firm, fast running surfaces and severe greens that define Sandbelt golf, is the heart of the etiquette here. The Composite Course, which stitches together the best holes of the West and East, is the layout used for championships, and a visit to either is a privilege earned through the right introduction.
Pace of play
Be ready to play when it is your turn, keep up with the group ahead, and limit a ball search in the tea tree and bunkering so a busy tee sheet keeps moving.
Care for the course
Repair pitch marks, replace divots or use the sand provided, and rake the famous Sandbelt bunkers carefully. These hazards are works of art as much as hazards, and they deserve the care.
Clubhouse and phones
Remove your cap on entering the clubhouse, keep phones on silent and take calls only in the locker rooms, and follow staff direction without fuss. For how the holes actually play, see our guide on how to play Royal Melbourne and the full Royal Melbourne West course profile.
Plan a Melbourne Sandbelt golf trip
Royal Melbourne is private, so access is the hard part. We arrange the right introduction and tee times and build the rest of your Sandbelt around it, from Kingston Heath to Victoria. Tell us roughly when and how many are travelling, and one concierge costs it to the head, with no obligation.
Royal Melbourne dress code questions
What is the dress code at Royal Melbourne?
Royal Melbourne asks for a standard of dress in keeping with the character of the club. On the course men wear tailored trousers, plus fours or tailored shorts with a collared shirt, neat and tucked in, and golf shoes with soft spikes and predominantly white or complementary short socks. Women wear neat slacks, tailored shorts or skirts with a collared shirt tucked in. Denim, tracksuits, football or rugby jumpers, golf hoodies, sweatshirts, cargo and draw string trousers or shorts, and clothing carrying writing or advertising beyond small logos are all not permitted. The club also prefers visible tattoos to be covered. Always confirm the current dress code directly before your visit.
Can you use a golf cart at Royal Melbourne?
Royal Melbourne is a walking club. The course is designed to be walked, with tees close to greens, and walking is part of how the Sandbelt is meant to be experienced. Golf carts are made available only for medical reasons, and the club asks that a doctor's certificate be provided in advance of the visit. Plan to walk, and if walking is genuinely not possible, arrange the medical cart and certificate ahead of time rather than on the day.
Can you wear shorts at Royal Melbourne?
Yes. Tailored golf shorts are permitted for both men and women at Royal Melbourne, worn with a collared shirt tucked in and predominantly white or complementary short socks. What is not allowed is cargo shorts, draw string shorts or denim. Given the firm, fast Sandbelt conditions and Melbourne's changeable weather, pack a layer and a waterproof regardless of the forecast.
How do visitors play Royal Melbourne?
Royal Melbourne is a private members club, so visitor access is by arrangement, typically as the guest of a member or through an organized tour or introduction from an affiliated club, rather than a public booking. The famous Composite Course, which combines the best holes of the West and East, is used for championships and special play. Because access is limited and demand for a Sandbelt trip is high, the practical route for travelling golfers is to have a planner arrange the introduction and tee time as part of a wider Melbourne Sandbelt itinerary. Always confirm current visitor arrangements directly with the club.
