How to Play the Best Golf in the Amalfi Coast

Here is the truth most golf sites will not tell you: there is no 18 hole course on the Amalfi Coast itself. The cliffs that make Positano and Ravello famous leave no room for fairways. What exists is a handful of courses around Naples and Salerno within day trip range, and a world class extension toward Rome. This guide plays it straight, so you can plan the trip honestly.

Why the Amalfi Coast is different

Every other guide on this site tells you where the great courses are. This one starts by telling you where they are not. The Amalfi Coast is a vertical landscape: lemon terraces, cliff roads and villages stacked above the sea. It is one of the most beautiful places in Italy, and it has no room for golf. The handful of courses serving the region sit on the flat ground around Naples and north of it, between roughly 90 minutes and two hours from a Positano or Ravello hotel by car.

That makes the honest play one of two trips. Either treat golf as a single day trip inside a coast holiday, built around Golf Club Volturno north of Naples, or split the trip and pair the coast with Rome and Lazio, three hours north, where Marco Simone and the capital's clubs offer genuine championship golf. For the country as a whole, our guide to golf in Italy and our ranking of the best courses in Italy show how good the rest of the map is.

How to plan it, step by step

  1. Decide what kind of trip this is. If golf matters most, base the golf days in Rome and Lazio and finish on the coast without clubs. If the coast matters most, plan one golf day trip and travel light.
  2. Base smart for a golf day. From Sorrento or Positano, a Volturno round is a full day: allow 90 minutes to two hours each way around Naples traffic. Leaving early and playing at midday is the realistic shape.
  3. Arrange restricted access ahead. Circolo Golf Napoli is the region's historic club but does not run an open visitor tee sheet. Contact the club well in advance or let a planner make the introduction, which is exactly what our trip planning desk does.
  4. Travel in the shoulder seasons. April to June and September to October give warm golf weather, open courses and a coast that is not gridlocked. August is for swimming, not golf.
  5. Consider the two center trip. Three or four nights of golf around Rome, then the fast train south and a clubless finish in Ravello, is the strongest version of this holiday. Our Italy golf holidays page shows how we structure it.

One more honest note: club rental quality in Campania is variable, so if your day trip matters, bring your own shoes and glove and confirm rental sets when booking. For a golf first Italian alternative with the same food and sun, Sardinia and Lake Como both out deliver the Amalfi Coast on the course.

Amalfi Coast golf questions

Are there golf courses on the Amalfi Coast?

Not on the coast itself. The cliffside geography that makes Positano and Ravello spectacular leaves no room for 18 holes. The nearest full course welcoming visitors is Golf Club Volturno north of Naples, around 90 minutes from the coast, with a small practice facility at Salerno Golf Club in Pontecagnano about 40 kilometers from Amalfi.

What is the best golf course near the Amalfi Coast?

Golf Club Volturno at Castel Volturno, an 18 hole par 71 routed through dunes and water about 30 minutes northwest of Naples, is the most dependable round for visitors. Circolo Golf Napoli plays 18 holes in the volcanic landscape at Arco Felice near Pozzuoli, but access is restricted, so contact the club well ahead.

Should I plan a golf trip to the Amalfi Coast?

Plan it as a magnificent coast trip with one or two golf day trips, not as a golf destination. Golfers who want serious Italian golf should pair the coast with Rome and Lazio, home of the 2023 Ryder Cup venue Marco Simone, about three hours north.

When is the best time for golf near the Amalfi Coast?

April to June and September to October. Campania courses stay open year round, but high summer is hot and the coast roads are at their most crowded. Spring and early autumn give warm golf weather and a calmer coast.
