How to Play the Best Golf in Muscat

Muscat is the Gulf's understated golf city: one genuine headliner in Al Mouj, Greg Norman's 7,342 yard links style course on the Gulf of Oman, backed by half a century of wadi golf at Ghala. Published summer 2026 visitor rates start at 69 OMR midweek with cart and range included, booking is easy, and the mountains start where the back nine ends. Here is the playbook.

The playbook, step by step

Step 1: build around Al Mouj

Al Mouj Golf is the reason Muscat makes a golf itinerary: Oman's first links style course, designed by Greg Norman, running 7,342 yards along the waterfront of The Wave development with the Gulf of Oman in play on the seaward holes. It has hosted international tour golf and holds its conditioning year round. Visitors are welcome every day, advance booking is essential, and a valid handicap certificate or card is required. A new clubhouse is set to open in 2026 with a TopTracer range and expanded facilities, so expect the place to feel newer still.

Step 2: read the rate card by season

Al Mouj publishes its fees openly. The summer 2026 card, May through September, lists visitor rates of 69 OMR midweek and 89 OMR at weekends for 18 holes, with the 9 hole course at 36 and 43 OMR; every green fee includes a cart and driving range access, and club hire starts at 15.750 OMR. Winter rates, October to April, are published seasonally and run higher. The rial is pegged at roughly 2.60 US dollars, so even the summer weekend rate undercuts Dubai's marquee courses in high season.

Step 3: add Ghala for the contrast

Ghala Golf Club is the other half of the Muscat story: founded in 1971, the oldest club in Oman, an 18 hole, fully grassed course threaded through a rocky wadi beside the Muscat Expressway. It is a members club that welcomes the public with prior booking, and 2026 listings put visitor green fees around 35 to 40 OMR, with reports of higher all in figures once extras are added. Where Al Mouj is polish, Ghala is character: play both and you have seen two completely different ideas of desert golf.

Step 4: time the trip for the cool season

October to April is prime: warm, dry days, the mountains sharp in the clear air, and every course at its best. Summer golf means dawn tee times and serious hydration, rewarded by the cheapest marquee golf in the Gulf.

Step 5: leave room for Oman itself

This is the Gulf city where the country outshines the clubhouse. The Mutrah souq and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque fill the non golf mornings, and the Hajar mountains, wadis and turtle beaches start within two hours of town. A golf trip that never leaves the city has missed the point of Oman.

The honest verdicts

Is Al Mouj really worth the detour?

Yes. It is the best course in the country by a distance and one of the Gulf's three or four finest, with a stretch of seaside holes Dubai cannot match for naturalness. The full national picture, including the resort golf rising elsewhere in the sultanate, is ranked in the best golf courses in Oman and mapped in our Oman destination guide.

Muscat alone, or Muscat plus Dubai?

For a first Gulf golf trip, pair them: the flight is under an hour, and the contrast between Dubai's stacked, floodlit golf scene, covered in our Dubai destination guide and the Dubai golf holidays page, and Muscat's quieter, wilder week is exactly what makes the combination sing. How Dubai's own courses stack up against each other is in Dubai vs Abu Dhabi. For the nights, our recommended Muscat stays run from The Wave's marina hotels to the resort coast at Bandar Jissah.

Muscat golf questions

How much does it cost to play Al Mouj Golf?

Al Mouj's published summer 2026 rates, covering May to September, are 69 OMR midweek and 89 OMR at weekends for 18 holes as a visitor, with the 9 hole course at 36 and 43 OMR; all green fees include a cart and driving range access, and club hire starts at 15.750 OMR. Winter rates from October to April are published seasonally and run higher. The rial is pegged at about 2.60 US dollars, so a summer midweek round lands near 180 dollars. Fees are indicative; always confirm directly before booking.

Do you need a handicap certificate to play in Muscat?

Al Mouj asks visitors for a valid handicap certificate or card and advance booking is essential. Ghala Golf Club welcomes the public subject to prior booking and is more relaxed in practice. Standard golf dress applies at both.

Is Muscat better than Dubai for a golf trip?

Different briefs. Dubai stacks more championship courses, bigger names and floodlit night golf; Muscat counters with one world class links style course at Al Mouj, real mountains and culture within an hour of the first tee, and a calmer, less commercial trip. Muscat works best as a four night golf stop or paired with Dubai into one Gulf swing of two flights and two contrasting cities.

When is the best time to play golf in Muscat?

October to April, when days are warm rather than punishing and the courses are at their best; this is also when rates peak. May to September is seriously hot, but dawn tee times are playable and Al Mouj's published summer 2026 visitor rate of 69 OMR midweek, cart included, makes it the value window for heat tolerant golfers.
