How to Play the Best Golf in Hokkaido
Japan's northern island plays golf the way visiting golfers wish the whole country did: a Jack Nicklaus flagship from 1991, 72 resort holes at Rusutsu, green fees from about 8,800 yen, and a relaxed culture where 18 holes without a lunch break is normal. The season runs roughly May to October. Here is how to get on.

Why Hokkaido is different
Golf in Hokkaido is more relaxed than anywhere else in Japan. Most courses let you play 9 or 18 holes as you please, the enforced lunch at the turn that defines club golf on Honshu is largely absent, and green fees are noticeably more reasonable than down south. Add summer temperatures that stay pleasant while Tokyo and Osaka swelter, and the island makes a compelling case as Japan's best warm weather golf destination.
The golf itself is carved from big landscapes: conifer forest, native lakes and volcanic foothills, with Mount Yotei standing over the Niseko resort belt the way Fuji watches over Kawana. The catch is the calendar. Most of these courses sit under ski resort snow from late autumn, so the season runs roughly May to October and everything books around the July and August peak. The courses that matter
| Course | Why it matters | Indicative fee (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Hokkaido Classic | Jack Nicklaus Signature design, opened 1991 near Tomakomai. Nicklaus based the design on the image of Muirfield Village, his home course, and it is widely rated the finest course on the island | Premium; rates by season, arrange at booking |
| The North Country GC | Big, modern championship test of 7,078 yards, par 72, in the Chitose corridor close to the airport | About 14,500 yen weekdays, 22,500 yen holidays |
| Hanazono Golf | Forest golf at the base of Niseko with views to Mount Yotei and Annupuri; fully English speaking operation | From about 8,800 yen weekdays, 12,800 yen holidays |
| Rusutsu Resort | 72 holes across four contrasting courses, Tower, Izumikawa, River and Wood, at the famous ski resort | Resort rates by course and season |
| Nidom Classic Course | 45 holes of woodland golf cut from conifer forest and native lakes, a short drive from New Chitose Airport | Confirm with the resort |
| Otaru Country Club | Kokichi Yasuda's 1974 layout near the coast northwest of Sapporo, host of the Japan PGA Championship within four years of opening | Confirm with the club |

How to book it, step by step
- Pick one of two bases. The Niseko and Rusutsu resort belt gives you Hanazono, Rusutsu's 72 holes and mountain scenery with international standard hotels. The Tomakomai and Chitose corridor puts Hokkaido Classic, Nidom and The North Country within a short drive of New Chitose Airport. Ambitious itineraries combine both with a two hour drive between them.
- Fix your dates around the season. Courses open roughly May to October. July and August are the sweet spot for weather and the busiest weeks for tee sheets; June and September are quieter and often cheaper.
- Book the marquee rounds first. Hokkaido Classic and the championship courses fill earliest, especially weekend mornings. Two to three months ahead is a sensible window in peak summer.
- Use the right booking channel. Resort courses such as Hanazono take direct English bookings online. Traditional members style clubs are smoother through your hotel concierge or a golf travel specialist, which is exactly the kind of arrangement we build into a Japan golf trip.
- Sort ground logistics. Fly into New Chitose, rent a car, and keep drive times honest: Niseko is about two hours from the airport, the Tomakomai cluster under an hour. A 9 hole evening loop is a real option here in a way it rarely is on Honshu.
Etiquette is standard Japanese club golf, slightly softened: be early, dress properly, and expect carts on most courses. Where the round does pause at the turn, lunch in a Hokkaido clubhouse, with the island's seafood and dairy, is no hardship.

What is the best golf course in Hokkaido?
Hokkaido Classic Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design that opened in 1991 near Tomakomai, is widely regarded as the finest course on the island. Nicklaus said the design was based on the image of Muirfield Village, his home club course in Ohio.
How much are green fees in Hokkaido?
Hokkaido is better value than most of Honshu. Indicative 2026 rates run from about 8,800 yen on weekdays at Hanazono Golf in Niseko to around 22,500 yen on weekends and holidays at The North Country Golf Club. Premium private style courses cost more. Always confirm directly before booking.
