Why golf in Oslo

Oslo is the most underrated golf city break in northern Europe. The capital sits at the head of a long fjord, hemmed by forested hills, and its best courses are scattered through that green belt within 20 minutes to an hour of the centre. A group can base in the heart of the city, dine on the harbour at Aker Brygge each night, and still make a mid morning tee time without fuss. The golf is northern parkland and forest at its purest: firm, well kept turf, water and granite, birch and spruce, and the soft, low light of a Scandinavian summer that lingers late into the evening.

The headline round is Miklagard, the Robert Trent Jones Jr and Christian Lundin design near Klofta that opened in 2001 and is regularly rated among Norway's finest, its holes named for Norse kings and gods. In the city itself, Oslo Golfklubb at Bogstad is the country's oldest and most exclusive club, a mature parkland test rebuilt by Steve Forrest. Add the friendly parkland of Losby just east of town and the spectacular, ravine crossed Holtsmark to the west, and Oslo makes a rounded long weekend that non golfers enjoy as much as the players, with the fjord, the ski jump, the museums and the food all on the doorstep.

The courses that matter

Miklagard Golf · Robert Trent Jones Jr and Christian Lundin, 2001

Norway's marquee championship course, near Klofta about 25 minutes northeast of the city and 10 minutes from Oslo Airport. A bold Robert Trent Jones Jr and Christian Lundin design through farmland and forest, its holes named for Norse monarchs and deities. The showpiece round of any Oslo trip.

Oslo Golfklubb, Bogstad · founded 1924, Steve Forrest rebuild 2008

Norway's oldest golf club, set on parkland at Bogstad in the city itself. A par 72 of about 6,300 metres rebuilt by the American architect Steve Forrest, with long par 3s and water in play on several holes. The most prestigious and historic round in Oslo, and a private members club.

Losby Golfklubb · Peter Nordwall

A welcoming venue about 20 minutes east of the centre, designed by the Swedish architect Peter Nordwall, with the championship 18 hole Ostmork course and the shorter nine hole Vestmork. Water hazards and long greens give the main course bite, and the manor house hotel makes it an easy base.

Holtsmark Golfklubb · Robert Trent Jones II

A dramatic Robert Trent Jones II layout near Sylling, roughly 50 minutes west of Oslo, with holes that run along ridgelines and across steep ravines. One of the region's first public courses and one of its most spectacular, it has been described as the Prince Course of Norway for its bold, plunging terrain.

Oustoen Country Club

Norway's most exclusive club, laid out on its own island in the Oslofjord and reached by the club's boat. A private, members and guests only retreat with a charm all of its own, it is the rare round that doubles as a day out on the water. Access is strictly limited, so it is one to arrange well in advance.

Designers, opening years and club histories verified June 2026 from the clubs and recognized course databases. Miklagard is a Robert Trent Jones Jr and Christian Lundin design opened in 2001; Oslo Golfklubb was founded in 1924 and rebuilt by Steve Forrest; Losby was designed by Peter Nordwall; Holtsmark is by Robert Trent Jones II. Access, conditioning and visitor policy change, so confirm with each club before planning.

Getting there, costs and where to stay

Oslo Airport (OSL) at Gardermoen is well connected across Europe and sits about 35 minutes north of the city by the Flytoget express train or by car, which conveniently places it near Miklagard. The other leading courses are spread through the forested belt east, west and within the city, between 20 minutes and an hour by car, so a hire car or a driver makes a multi course trip straightforward. Most groups base in central Oslo for the harbour dining, the design hotels and the museums, and drive out to the golf each day.

Norway is not a budget destination, but green fees are fair for the quality and the city carries the rest of the experience. We can pair the right central hotel with the best of the Oslo clubs and arrange the tee times and transfers as one package, including the harder bookings at Oslo Golfklubb and the island round at Oustoen.
