The Best Golf Courses in Norway

Norway plays golf against some of the most spectacular scenery on earth, from a world top 100 links above the Arctic Circle, played under the midnight sun, to championship parkland and lakeside courses around Oslo. Here are the ten we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

Norway is a small golf country with a short season and one truly world famous course, so a top ten here is as much about scenery and experience as about championship architecture. We weighed design quality, the drama of the setting, conditioning and the pleasure of the round, and we leaned heavily toward courses a visiting golfer can realistically play, which in Norway is nearly all of them, since the clubs are welcoming and pay and play is common. The standout, by a distance, is Lofoten Links, a links above the Arctic Circle that has earned a place among the best courses in the world on natural beauty alone.

Below it sits a cluster of strong parkland and lakeside courses, most of them around Oslo and the fjords of the south, where the golf is good and the views are better. Every fact here was checked at the time of writing, and where we could not verify a designer or a year we have described a course by its setting and character rather than invent a detail. The verdicts are ours and the ranking reflects our editors' view; reasonable people will reorder the field below the top three. If you want any of these built into a costed trip, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Lofoten Links

Jeremy Turner · Gimsoya, above the Arctic Circle

One of the most spectacular courses on the planet and the only Norwegian course in the global top 100, a links laid out by Jeremy Turner on the island of Gimsoya in the Lofoten archipelago, above the Arctic Circle. Holes run between the ocean, white sand beaches and jagged granite peaks, and in midsummer you can play all night under the midnight sun. Expanded to a full eighteen in 2015, it is a bucket list pilgrimage worth the long journey north, and openly welcoming to visitors.

02

Miklagard Golf Club

Robert Trent Jones Jr, 2001 · Klofta, near Oslo

The leading championship course in the country, a Robert Trent Jones Junior design that opened in 2001 at Klofta, a short drive north of Oslo near the main airport. Rolling, beautifully conditioned parkland with water and bold bunkering, it is regularly rated Norway's number one inland course and has the length and polish to test the best. The most convenient marquee round for a visiting golfer, and the natural anchor of an Oslo trip.

03

Oslo Golfklubb, Bogstad

Founded 1924 · Bogstad, Oslo

The oldest and most prestigious club in Norway, founded in 1924 and set on the wooded shore of Lake Bogstad on the edge of the capital, with the forested hills of the Nordmarka rising behind. A mature, tree lined parkland that has been carefully modernised, it is the historic heart of Norwegian golf and a benchmark for conditioning. A private members club, with limited visitor access best arranged in advance.

04

Larvik Golfklubb

Jan Sederholm, 1989 · Larvik Fjord

A handsome parkland on the edge of the Larvik Fjord south of Oslo, designed by the Swedish architect Jan Sederholm and opened in 1989. Sea breezes, mature woodland and glimpses of the water give it a fine seaside parkland character, and it has long been one of the most respected courses on the southern coast. An enjoyable, well kept round and an easy pairing with the beaches and towns of the Vestfold coast.

05

Stavanger Golfklubb

Stavanger · classic parkland

One of Norway's oldest and most admired parkland clubs, set in mature, tree lined terrain close to the city of Stavanger on the southwest coast. The fairways are relatively tight and the trees demand precision off the tee, making it a thinking golfer's course rather than a bomber's. A respected, traditional test in a region of fjords and beaches, and a comfortable base for golf in the Stavanger area.

06

Holtsmark Golfklubb

Lier · Scandinavian woodland

Scandinavian woodland golf at its best, a pay and play course at Lier west of Oslo whose tree lined fairways are routed along ridgelines and across a series of steep, wooded valleys. Dramatic elevation, total seclusion among the pines and generous public access make it a favourite for a memorable round near the capital. Bring spare balls for the valleys and enjoy the views.

07

Tyrifjorden Golfklubb

Holsfjorden · lakeside, 45 minutes from Oslo

A scenic course set on historic, hilly ground on the shore of one of Norway's biggest lakes, the Tyrifjorden, around forty five minutes' drive from Oslo. The rolling terrain and the water give it real character and some memorable holes, and the lakeside setting makes it one of the prettier rounds within easy reach of the capital. Welcoming to visitors as part of an Oslo region itinerary.

Bjaavann Golfklubb

Opened 2006 · near Kristiansand

A modern course opened in 2006 and laid out around Lake Bjaavann in the forests above Kristiansand on the south coast. Woodland, rock and water give it a wild, natural Scandinavian feel, and its setting among the lakes and pines makes it a scenic highlight of golf in the south. A good addition to a trip taking in the beaches and skerries of the Sorlandet coast.

09

Borre Golfklubb

Founded 1990 · Horten, Vestfold

One of the largest and busiest clubs in the country, founded in 1990 at Borre near Horten on the Vestfold coast southwest of Oslo. 10

Atlungstad Golfklubb

Stange · on Lake Mjosa

A lakeside course on the shore of Mjosa, the largest lake in Norway, north of Oslo near Hamar. Norway golf questions

What is the best golf course in Norway?

Lofoten Links, a links laid out by Jeremy Turner on the island of Gimsoya above the Arctic Circle, is the clear number one and the only Norwegian course in the global top 100. Miklagard near Oslo, a Robert Trent Jones Junior design, is the best of the inland championship courses, with the historic Oslo Golfklubb at Bogstad close behind.

Can you play golf under the midnight sun in Norway?

Yes. At Lofoten Links and other courses in the far north, the sun does not set for several weeks around midsummer, so you can tee off at midnight and play through the night in full daylight. It is one of the most memorable experiences in golf and the single biggest reason to make the trip north.

When is the best time to play golf in Norway?

The season is short, running roughly from late May to September, with high summer the prime window. June and July bring the longest days and, in the north, the midnight sun. The shoulder weeks of late spring and early autumn can be cooler and wetter, so high summer is the safest choice for a golf trip.

Where is the best golf in Norway?

Two areas stand out: the Lofoten Islands in the far north, home to the world famous links, and the region around Oslo and the southern fjords, where most of the championship parkland and lakeside courses are clustered within an easy drive of the capital. A trip usually focuses on one or the other given the distances involved.
