The draw is the climate, cool and dry when Tokyo and the south swelter, set against an alpine backdrop of volcanic cones and birch forest that feels closer to the Rockies than to Honshu. It suits the couple pairing golf with onsen hot springs and world class food, the skier who knows Niseko in winter and wants to see it green, and the group chasing somewhere genuinely different from the usual Asian golf circuit.
The smart play is to base in Niseko and treat the mountains as one connected region. The Niseko courses, Rusutsu's seventy two holes and Hanazono all sit within an easy drive, with Lake Toya and Furano as day trips. The wider island fills out longer trips. Sapporo, two hours from the resorts, adds parkland courses, the city's beer halls and seafood, and is the natural first or last night by New Chitose Airport. Lake Toya and the Windsor resort sit between the city and Niseko, and Furano further inland adds lavender fields and more golf. Build these around the core mountain rounds as the trip lengthens.
