Golf in Hainan

China's tropical island has quietly become Asia's biggest golf playground: ten courses at one resort in Haikou, including the lava field monster Blackstone at 7,808 yards, resort golf above the beaches of Sanya, and a season that runs all twelve months. Here is how the island fits together and when to go.

Why golf here

Hainan hangs off the south coast of China at the same latitude as Hawaii, and it plays a similar role: the warm island escape where a giant country goes to play golf in winter. The golf is concentrated and ambitious. In the north, Mission Hills Haikou stacks ten courses onto a single property built over an ancient lava field, about 10 kilometers south of the capital. In the south, the resort city of Sanya scatters championship golf above some of Asia's best beaches, led by Yalong Bay Golf Club and the JMP designed Sun Valley.

For the traveling golfer the pitch is simple: tropical weather when Europe and North America are dark, hotel and golf pricing that undercuts comparable trips to Hawaii or the Gulf, and the novelty of unlimited golf at a single mega resort. It belongs on the same shortlist as Thailand and Vietnam for a winter escape in Asia.

The courses that matter

1

Mission Hills Haikou · Blackstone

The flagship of the ten course Haikou complex and the heavyweight of Chinese resort golf: a par 73 stretching to 7,808 yards, routed over an ancient lava field through dense jungle and open wetlands dotted with lychee trees. Big, bold and genuinely championship caliber, it is the one round every visitor should lock in first.

2

Yalong Bay Golf Club · Sanya

Robert Trent Jones II set out to build a championship linksland resort course above Sanya's most famous bay, and since opening in 2000 it has sat among the top courses in China. It now hosts a PGA of America learning and performance center, a marker of how seriously Sanya takes its golf. The classic south island round.

3

Mission Hills Haikou · Lava Fields

The second course to play at Haikou, picking its way through the same black volcanic rockscape as Blackstone with a touch less length and a lower fee. The lava framing makes it one of the most photogenic rounds in China.

Indicative fee about CNY1,780 (2026)
4

Sun Valley Golf Resort · Sanya

A JMP designed championship course on highland ground with a commanding view over Yalong Bay, stretching beyond 7,800 yards at par 73. The elevation gives it breezes and panoramas the beachside courses cannot match.

5

Mission Hills Haikou · Sandbelt Trails

Haikou's homage to the Melbourne sandbelt, with sprawling sand flashed bunkering in the spirit of Kingston Heath and Royal Melbourne. With The Vintage alongside at the same fee, it anchors the value end of the complex.

6

Mission Hills Haikou · The Vintage and the rest

The Vintage channels old world design ideas, the short Stepping Stone course at about CNY580 is the island's best warm up loop, and the remaining layouts keep a week of golf fresh without repeating a single hole. Sanya's Luhuitou and Begonia Bay clubs round out a southern stay.

Costs, getting there and where to stay

Green fees run from about CNY580 for Haikou's short course to about CNY2,080 for Blackstone, roughly $80 to $290 at 2026 exchange rates, with most championship rounds in between. That is sharp pricing for golf of this scale; fees are indicative for 2026 and always worth confirming directly before booking.

Two international airports serve the island, Haikou Meilan in the north and Sanya Phoenix in the south, with dense connections through the major Chinese hubs and a growing list of direct regional routes. Hainan also operates a visa free entry scheme for visitors from many countries; rules change, so check current requirements before travel. A north plus south itinerary, three or four nights at Mission Hills and the balance in Sanya, covers the island in a week with one two hour drive or a high speed rail hop between them.

At Mission Hills the play is to stay on property, where the resort hotel, spa and the famous mineral springs sit beside the courses. In Sanya, the hotel belt along Yalong Bay puts the marquee golf, the best beach and the international resort brands within a few minutes of each other.
