Pickala Golf
Finland's biggest golf day out. Pickala spreads 45 holes across the coast and forest west of Helsinki, headlined by the par 72 Seaside Course that Tom Mackenzie and Martin Ebert remodeled, backed by the wooded Forest Course and a nine hole Park. Long midsummer light means you can play and play, and a green here often runs past midnight.

The verdict
If you are building a Helsinki golf trip, Pickala is the engine room. Set in Siuntio about 45 minutes west of the capital, it is one of the largest resorts in the Nordics, with three distinct experiences on one site: the Seaside Course, the Forest Course and a friendly nine hole Park. That variety is the whole point. You can play a different round every day without leaving the property, then stay on site between them.
The Seaside is the one to circle. The British firm of Tom Mackenzie and Martin Ebert, names trusted with Open Championship links, brought their touch to a coastal layout of about 6,105 yards, where the holes work between the treeline and the water. The Forest Course, a par 72 of about 6,227 yards laid out by Jan Sederholm, is the quieter, more sheltered test through Finland's characteristic spruce. Add the white nights of a Finnish summer, when the sun barely sets, and Pickala becomes a golf trip with a rhythm all its own.

The holes worth the trip
Start with the Seaside. The Mackenzie and Ebert remodel sharpened the strategy without inflating the yardage, so it asks for position and thought rather than brute length. The coastal holes are the memorable ones, exposed to the breeze off the Gulf of Finland with the treeline framing the targets, and the greens reward an approach played to the correct side.
The Forest Course is a complete change of mood, tighter and more sheltered, threading between mature spruce where the tee shot has to find the gap and the second has to stay below the hole. It is the more old fashioned test of the two big courses, and many members quietly prefer it.
The nine hole Park is the social round, ideal for an evening loop in the long northern light or for warming up before the championship layouts. Together the three give a group of mixed abilities somewhere everyone enjoys, which is exactly what you want from a resort base. Take a cart on the bigger courses if you are playing 36 in a day, and pace yourself, the daylight will not stop you.

Where to stay nearby
The simplest plan is to stay at Pickala itself. On site accommodation puts the first tee minutes from your door and makes those 36 hole midsummer days effortless, with dining and a clubhouse to return to between rounds. For a golf focused group it is hard to beat the convenience.
Many visitors split the trip, basing a night or two in central Helsinki for the harbour, the design district and the restaurants, then moving out to the coast for the golf. The capital and its airport are under an hour away, so Pickala pairs naturally with a city stay at either end of the trip.
