Why golf in Agadir

Agadir is Morocco's most complete winter golf destination, and one of the best value in reach of Europe. The city sits on a long Atlantic beach in the south of the country, sheltered by the Atlas mountains, with around three hundred days of sun a year and a sea breeze that keeps even the summer comfortable. Rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake, it is a relaxed, modern resort town with a deep bench of golf: well over a hundred holes within a short drive, served by direct flights of around three and a half hours from the UK.

The headline arrival is Tazegzout, Kyle Phillips's clifftop course set among argan trees at Taghazout Bay, with holes perched high above the ocean. South of the city, an easy corridor of courses runs inland from the beach, the thirty six holes of Golf du Soleil, the twenty seven of Golf de l'Ocean and Cabell Robinson's Les Dunes, joined by the Robert Trent Jones designed Golf du Palais Royal. Add reliable warmth, good food and gentle prices, and Agadir makes a serious case as a sun and golf week for the whole group.

The courses that matter

Tazegzout Golf

Kyle Phillips · Par 72 · Taghazout Bay

The headline course of the region, a Kyle Phillips design woven through argan trees at Taghazout Bay with several holes perched on cliffs high above the Atlantic. Modern, dramatic and immaculately presented, attached to the Fairmont resort, it is the premium round in Agadir.

Golf du Soleil

Mueller and Courbin · 36 holes · Agadir

A thirty six hole complex between the ocean and the Atlas, its fairways planted with tamarisk, eucalyptus, mimosa and palm. The mature, tree lined loops give plenty of variety for a multi day stay and make it the workhorse of an Agadir golf week.

Golf de l'Ocean

Belt Collins · 27 holes · Agadir

A twenty seven hole course opened in 2010 across ninety hectares of greens, natural sand and four lakes, framed by eucalyptus and palm. It has hosted the Hassan II Trophy and the Lalla Meryem Cup, a championship pedigree rare for a resort course.

Golf Les Dunes

Cabell B. Robinson, 1991 · 27 holes · Agadir

Cabell Robinson's hilly, wooded twenty seven holes on the edge of the city, with three loops named for the eucalyptus, oued and tamaris that frame them, rotated to form the eighteen of the day. A strong, established test and a longtime tour venue.

Golf du Palais Royal d'Agadir

Robert Trent Jones Sr · 18 holes · Agadir

A Robert Trent Jones design close to the city, lush, manicured and lined with palms and flowers in the classic American resort idiom, a polished round from one of the great names in golf architecture.

Royal Golf d'Agadir

Founded 1953 · 9 holes · Agadir

The original golf course of the city, a charming, mature nine hole layout among eucalyptus and cypress trees near town. Short and relaxed, it is a pleasant warm up or an easy afternoon round to round out a trip.

Getting there and around

Agadir Al Massira airport sits a short drive east of the city and the golf, with direct flights from across Europe of around three and a half to four hours from the UK. Transfers and a hire car are both easy, and because the courses cluster within twenty minutes of the beach hotels, most golfers rely on resort transfers or a driver rather than self driving. The Taghazout Bay courses are a quick run north along the coast road. Day trips to Taroudant and the Atlas foothills are within easy reach for a non golfing afternoon.

Where to stay

For a premium golf and spa week, base at Taghazout Bay, where the Fairmont and Hyatt Place hotels sit beside Tazegzout. For the corridor courses, the beachfront hotels of Agadir itself put you minutes from Golf du Soleil, Golf de l'Ocean and Les Dunes, with a long promenade, restaurants and the souk on your doorstep. Many resorts package several rounds with half board, which suits a group well. Book ahead for the winter peak, and let one planner match the base to your course list.
