Villamartin Golf

Villamartin is one of the Costa Blanca's founding courses, opened in 1972 and laid out by Paul Putman on rolling ground above Orihuela Costa. Mature, characterful and still a stern test, it hosted the Mediterranean Open in 1994 and remains the anchor of the cluster of courses that share its name south of Torrevieja.

The verdict

Few courses set the tone for a whole region the way Villamartin did for the southern Costa Blanca. Opened in 1972 to a Paul Putman design, it predates almost everything around it, and the village, the cluster of neighboring courses and a generation of golf holidays grew up in its shadow. Decades of maturity show in the tree lined fairways and settled greens.

It is not long by modern numbers, but the rolling terrain, the pines and the ravines that bite on the back nine keep it relevant, and it has the tournament pedigree to back up its reputation as host of the 1994 Mediterranean Open. For a visiting group it is the classic, central base for a Costa Blanca golf week. See our best of Spain ranking and the golf in Spain guide for context.

The holes worth the trip

The opening nine plays across the higher ground, with panoramic views over the rolling countryside toward the sea, while the back nine drops into the valleys where ravines and ranks of mature pine narrow the targets and reward an accurate iron game.

Tree lined corridors and small, well defended greens are the recurring theme. This is a positional course where finding the fairway and the correct level on the putting surface matters far more than length off the tee, and the closing holes have the bite that decided the 1994 professional event here.

It sits at the heart of a tight cluster of courses, so it pairs easily with neighboring Las Ramblas and La Finca for a varied few days without long transfers, the reason the area is a buddies trip favorite.

Where to stay nearby

Villamartin sits in a dense resort zone of hotels, villas and apartments around Orihuela Costa and Playa Flamenca, with beaches, the Zenia Boulevard shopping center and a long line of restaurants within minutes of the first tee. Most golf groups base themselves here and drive a few minutes between courses.

Because the courses are so close together, a Villamartin week naturally takes in Las Ramblas, La Finca and others nearby. Torrevieja and the salt lakes are close for non golf days.
