The verdict

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande opened in 1964 as the first course Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed in Europe, the centerpiece of the Sotogrande estate that the American businessman Joseph McMicking carved out of the Andalusian countryside near San Roque. It set the template for the Costa del Sol that followed, but it remains a class apart, a mature, tree lined parkland of cork oaks and umbrella pines that Trent Jones himself named among his five favorite courses from the more than five hundred he built worldwide.

A par 72 measuring around 6,300 metres, roughly 6,900 yards, from the back tees, Sotogrande is a study in classic strategic design, with broad fairways, beautifully proportioned holes and fast, elevated greens guarded by deep bunkers. In 1994 King Juan Carlos I granted the club the title Real, or Royal, in recognition of its standing. Private and understated, it is the connoisseur’s choice on a coast better known for its resort golf, and the original from which its more famous neighbor Valderrama was later born.

The holes worth the trip

Sotogrande is a course of width and subtlety. Trent Jones gave the player room from the tee, then defended the greens, raising them above the fairways, running them fast and ringing them with the deep bunkers that are his signature. The premium is on the approach and on judging the firm, quick putting surfaces, where a shot to the wrong level can be very costly.

The cork oaks and pines frame the holes and come into play on the errant shot, while water features on several holes add a further test of nerve. It is a course that rewards the complete player rather than the merely powerful, asking for shape, control and a deft touch around the greens. The conditioning, mature trees and quiet exclusivity give it an atmosphere few courses on the coast can match.

For the travelling golfer Sotogrande is the historic heart of Spanish golf, a round to be earned and savored. It sits within minutes of Valderrama, La Reserva and San Roque, making the Sotogrande corner of the Costa del Sol the most concentrated and prestigious cluster of golf in mainland Spain. Few rounds in Europe carry such pedigree.
