Fancourt Montagu
The grand parkland of the Garden Route. The Montagu carries Fancourt's original Gary Player pedigree, was rebuilt at championship scale by David McLay Kidd in 2004, and was polished again under Player's eye in 2018. A par 72 of 6,714 meters beneath the Outeniqua mountains, reserved for resort guests and members. Here is the verdict, the facts, the holes and how to get on.

The verdict
The Montagu is the round that makes a Fancourt stay feel complete. The Links next door takes the headlines, but the Montagu is the course members would keep: a broad shouldered, beautifully kept parkland that uses the Outeniqua foothills for its backdrops and its movement. McLay Kidd's 2004 rebuild gave it modern length and two new holes, the par 4 1st and the par 5 9th, and the 2018 refresh overseen by Player resurfaced the bent grass greens, widened the landing areas and thinned the bunkering, trading punishment for polish without losing the test.
The result is the most playable serious course on the property: long enough at full stretch to host anything, generous enough from the members tees that a resort guest on holiday walks off smiling. With the Outeniqua alongside and The Links behind the hedge, Fancourt is the densest concentration of quality golf in the country, and the Montagu is its everyday masterpiece. Our best courses in South Africa ranking shows where it sits nationally.

The Montagu carries Fancourt's original Gary Player era pedigree, was substantially rebuilt by David McLay Kidd in 2004 and refreshed under Gary Player in 2018. It plays as a par 72 at 6,714 meters. Indicative 2026 hotel guest rates: around R1,525 in high season, November through March, including halfway, and around R1,120 in low season, cart around R585; no day visitors. Fees change by season and year, so always confirm directly before booking.
The holes worth the trip
The two McLay Kidd holes set the tone for each nine. The 1st is a strong, honest par 4 that announces the rebuilt course's scale immediately, and the 9th is a genuine three shot par 5 that climbs back toward the clubhouse with the mountains filling the horizon. In between, the front nine works through avenues of established trees where the angles matter more than the yardage and the bent grass greens run as purely as any in the country.
The back nine is where the Montagu shows its hand. Water shadows several of the closing holes, and the finishing stretch asks for the round's best long irons just as the afternoon wind slides off the Outeniquas. The par 3s across the card are the quiet stars, each playing a different direction and a different length, so no single swing gets you through the set. Nothing is hidden and nothing is unfair: the course simply keeps asking for one more well struck shot.
Play it the day after arriving, when the Outeniqua has loosened the travel out of your swing, and keep the morning tee time: the mountains hold the light and the greens are at their truest before the wind arrives.
