Al Mouj Golf

Greg Norman carved Al Mouj Golf along two kilometres of the Arabian Sea in Muscat, opening in 2012 as Oman's first links style layout. A par 72 of 7,342 yards through dunes, salt flats and seaside grasses, it anchors the Al Mouj waterfront community and has hosted the European Tour's Oman Open.

The verdict

Al Mouj is Oman's marquee resort course, a Greg Norman links style design that opened in 2012 and runs hard along the Gulf of Oman in the heart of Muscat. Wide, rumpled fairways, native grasses and sea breezes give it the feel of a coastal links transplanted to Arabia.

At 7,342 yards it has plenty of muscle, and the wind off the water is the chief defence, asking for flighted shots and a links player's imagination around firm greens. As host of the Oman Open it has tournament pedigree, and its city location, beside hotels, marina and beach, makes it one of the easiest premium rounds to slot into a Gulf trip.

The holes worth the trip

Al Mouj plays as a true links style test, the fairways broad and tumbling, the rough thick with native grasses and the sea never far from the line. The ground game is alive here, with run offs and firm surfaces rewarding the player who flights the ball and uses the contours.

Wind is the great variable. On a calm morning the course is gettable, but when the sea breeze gets up the same holes bare their teeth, and par becomes a fine score. Water and waste areas frame several holes, and the bunkering is positioned to punish the greedy line.

The closing holes run beside the marina and the sea, a handsome, exposed finish that has decided Oman Opens. With the dramatic Hajar mountains as a backdrop and the Gulf alongside, Al Mouj is as photogenic as it is testing.
