The verdict

Castelconturbia is the benchmark for inland golf in northern Italy, and the rare Italian club that a visiting golfer should plan a day around rather than slot in as a filler. When Robert Trent Jones Sr was commissioned to lay out 27 holes here in the 1980s, he found a near perfect canvas, gently rolling parkland of mature oak, chestnut and silver birch on the plain north of Novara, with the white wall of Monte Rosa rising in the distance. The result is a course of real architectural pedigree that hosted the Italian Open in 1991 and again in 1998.

The land is arranged as three contrasting nines, the Yellow, the Blue and the Red, which combine into three different eighteens. The championship pairing of Yellow and Blue is the one to play, a par 72 of about 6,440 yards that shows Trent Jones at his most strategic: generous off the tee, then increasingly demanding into greens defended by his signature sculpted bunkers and water. It is polished, fair and quietly grand, and along with Royal Park I Roveri and Biella it anchors any serious Piedmont golf itinerary.

Designer, layout, par and yardage verified June 2026 from the club and leading course databases. The 27 holes were designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr; the championship Yellow and Blue combination plays to par 72 of about 6,440 yards and hosted the 1991 and 1998 Italian Open. The club welcomes visitors, normally with a handicap certificate, and green fees in 2026 are indicatively in the region of 100 to 130 euros in high season, with discounted online, twilight and Red course rates lower. Always confirm the current fee and availability directly before booking.

The holes worth the trip

Trent Jones built width and temptation into the tee shots, then made the second shot the test. The fairways roll through the woodland in clean, generous corridors, but the greens are large, contoured and ringed by the deep, flowing bunkers that were his trademark, so position on the fairway decides everything about the approach. Find the wrong side and a simple looking par becomes a scramble.

Water is used sparingly but pointedly, most memorably on the short holes, where a long iron or a wedge must carry to a green guarded by a pond and framed by trees, with no run up bailout. The par 5s reward thought rather than brute length, offering a real risk and reward decision to anyone willing to take on the corner, while the closing stretch of the Yellow and Blue eighteen has the strength to settle a match.

The third nine, the Red, is the gentlest of the trio and a fine warm up or a relaxed second loop, which makes Castelconturbia a genuine two round destination: a championship test in the morning and a lighter, scenic round under Monte Rosa in the afternoon.

Where to stay nearby

Most visiting golfers base themselves around Lago Maggiore or in the country between Novara and the lake, where lakeside resort hotels and quiet rural properties both sit within easy reach of the first tee. The lake towns of Stresa and Arona add restaurants, gardens and the boat to the Borromean Islands for any non golfing days, and Milan is close enough for a city night either side of the trip.

For a wider tour, Castelconturbia pairs naturally with the other great courses of the northwest, Bogogno just minutes away, Royal Park I Roveri and Circolo Golf Torino over toward Turin, and Biella Le Betulle in the foothills, so a group can build several days of contrasting parkland golf around a single Piedmont base.
