The verdict

Robert von Hagge arrived in the Novara countryside in the late 1990s and shaped two eighteens at Bogogno, the Bonora and the Del Conte, on gently rolling farmland backed on a clear day by the snow line of Monte Rosa. The Bonora is the championship layout, a par 72 of about 6,490 yards, and it is the one visiting golfers come for.

Von Hagge's signature is everywhere: broad, flowing fairways, deep sculpted bunkers with grassy capes and bays, and large greens that fall away at the edges. Water comes into play on a handful of holes without ever feeling forced. It is resort golf at a high level, generous enough off the tee to be enjoyable for a mid handicapper yet exacting enough around the greens to test a good player. Paired with the on site hotel and the lakes and food of Piedmont on the doorstep, Bogogno makes an easy anchor for a northern Italy golf trip.

The holes worth the trip

The Bonora opens in comfortable fashion before the design tightens through the middle of each nine. Von Hagge routed wide fairways that funnel toward greens guarded by his trademark flashed bunkering, so the premium is less on driving straight than on choosing the side of the fairway that opens the angle in.

Water features on several holes through the loop, most memorably on the short par 4s and the reachable par 5s where a bold second flirts with a lake. The greens are large and full of movement, and three putts come quickly to those who finish on the wrong tier. The closing stretch runs back toward the clubhouse and the hotel, with the long par 4 home hole a fair, demanding finish.

It is a course that rewards thoughtful, controlled golf over brute length, and the conditioning is consistently among the best in the region. With the Del Conte alongside it, Bogogno gives a visiting group two contrasting eighteens without leaving the property.
