Terre Blanche golf resort, Provence, championship fairway running through wooded Var hills

Terre Blanche, Le Chateau

The best golf resort in the south of France, set in the wooded hills of the Var inland from the Riviera. Dave Thomas laid out two championship courses here in 2003, Le Chateau and Le Riou, and married them to a five star hotel, spa and one of Europe's finest practice academies. Le Chateau is the headline test, a par 72 that has hosted senior tour golf and rewards the thinking player.

The verdict

Terre Blanche is the complete golf resort, and the standard bearer for golf in Provence and the wider French Riviera. Hidden in the gentle hills above Tourrettes, between Cannes and the perched village of Fayence, it pairs two genuinely good Dave Thomas courses with a Four Seasons era of five star hospitality, a destination spa, and an Albatros performance academy that is among the most complete in Europe. It is a place to settle in for several days, not just tick off a round.

Of the two layouts, Le Chateau is the one to build the trip around. It is the longer and more demanding course, a par 72 of roughly 7,200 yards that has hosted the French Riviera Masters on the European Senior Tour, while its sibling Le Riou is the more scenic and playable of the pair. Both wind through umbrella pine, cork oak and Mediterranean scrub with the Var hills as a backdrop, immaculately kept, and a golf cart is part of the green fee because the terrain has real movement. For a couples trip or a buddies week with comfort built in, few European resorts do it better.

Dave Thomas designed both Le Chateau and Le Riou, which opened in 2003; Le Chateau plays as a par 72 of about 7,200 yards, roughly 6,500 meters, from the back tees. An 18 hole green fee on Le Chateau is an indicative 190 euros per person for 2026, typically including a GPS cart and practice access, with nine hole and stay and play packages available; rates change by season, so always confirm directly before booking.

The holes worth the trip

Le Chateau is a course of width, elevation change and well defended greens, the work of an architect who built it to test the better player from the back while staying enjoyable from the forward tees. Dave Thomas routed it through the pines and over the natural folds of the land, so blind crests, downhill drives and approaches played across or alongside water all feature, and a GPS cart earns its keep working out the yardages.

The par 3s are a highlight, several of them played to greens set among rock and pine with the Var hills beyond, and they ask for precise mid and long iron control rather than brute strength. The par 5s give the bigger hitter a chance to score, but the green complexes are firm and contoured enough that position into them matters more than length, and a sharp short game is the difference between a good card and a frustrating one.

The finish brings you back toward the clubhouse and the hotel above, and the abiding impression is of a resort course built to a championship standard, polished, varied and fair. Pair Le Chateau with the prettier Le Riou over a couple of days and you have one of the most rounded golf stays in the south of France.
