The Best Golf Courses in Provence

Provence pairs some of France's finest golf with lavender fields, hilltop villages and Mediterranean light. From a five-star Tom Weiskopf resort to the region's only Seve Ballesteros design, these are the seven courses we would build a Provence trip around, ranked with our verdicts and how to play each one.

How we chose

Provence is as much about the setting as the scorecard, so our ranking rewards the courses that combine genuine design quality with the scenery, conditioning and welcome that make a southern French golf trip special. We weighed the golf first, the pedigree of the architect and the layout, then gave credit to the resorts and clubs that back it with the lodging, dining and ease of access a travelling golfer wants. The order favours rounds worth crossing the region for, not simply the nearest tee.

The courses spread across the Var and the Bouches-du-Rhône, from the hills behind the Cote d'Azur at Terre Blanche and Saint-Endreol to the Alpilles and the Luberon at Servanes and Pont Royal, with a clifftop round near the coast. Most sit within an hour or so of each other, so you can pair several into a trip and fill the evenings with Provencal villages, rose and the table. The verdicts are ours; the designers and awards we cite are a matter of record.

The seven best courses in Provence

01

Terre Blanche, Le Chateau

Tom Weiskopf · Tourrettes, Var · par 72

The finest golf in Provence, the championship course at the five-star Terre Blanche resort above Fayence, one of two Tom Weiskopf designs on the estate. Bold, beautifully sculpted and immaculately kept, it rolls through wooded Provencal hills with water, elevation change and grand views, backed by a hotel, spa and golf academy. The round, and the resort, to centre a luxury trip on.

02

Pont Royal

Severiano Ballesteros · Mallemort, Bouches-du-Rhône · par 72

Provence's only Severiano Ballesteros design and a repeat winner of France's Best Golf Course award, set in the rugged country between the Luberon and the Alpilles. A hilly, strategic and at times exacting test that bears the great Spaniard's imagination, it has hosted Challenge Tour events and rewards the thinking golfer. A must-play for anyone serious about the region's golf.

03

Terre Blanche, Le Riou

Tom Weiskopf · Tourrettes, Var · par 72

The second Weiskopf course at Terre Blanche, a touch more forgiving than Le Chateau but every bit as scenic, winding through olive trees, oaks and water with the perched village of Tourrettes on the skyline. It lets a mixed group enjoy resort golf of the highest standard, and pairing the two courses over a stay is one of the great golf experiences in the south of France. Beautiful and playable.

04

Saint-Endreol

La Motte, Var · valley parkland · par 72

A dramatic, hilly course in a wooded valley near La Motte, framed by red Esterel rock and threaded with lakes, best known for its spectacular signature par 3 played across water from a high tee. Quirky, scenic and great fun, with a spa hotel and apartments on site, it is a lively counterpoint to the polished resort courses and a favourite for a relaxed Var golf break. Theatrical and enjoyable.

05

Barbaroux

Pete and P.B. Dye · Brignoles, Var · par 72

The most distinctive course in Provence, the only Pete and P.B. Dye design in the region and a rare slice of American architecture in the pine forests near Brignoles. Rolling terrain, deep bunkers, water and big, contoured greens give it real drama and a tougher, more strategic feel than its neighbours, with an on-site hotel for a stay-and-play. The pick for golfers chasing serious design.

06

Golf de Servanes

Mouries, Alpilles · parkland · par 72

A gentle, characterful course in the heart of the Alpilles near Mouries, laid out among olive groves and pines beneath the limestone ridges with a handsome old mas as its clubhouse. Walkable and welcoming rather than fearsome, it captures the essence of Provence and sits within easy reach of Les Baux, Arles and Saint-Remy. The choice for golf wrapped in classic Provencal scenery.

07

Fregate

Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer, Var coast · clifftop · par 72

The coastal round, a course set high above the Mediterranean between Bandol and Cassis, with vineyards, pines and sweeping sea views from a hotel perched on the cliffs. Hilly and exposed to the breeze, with several memorable holes looking out over the water, it adds a seaside dimension to a Provence trip and pairs golf with the famous Bandol vineyards next door. Scenic and breezy.

A loose map: Terre Blanche and Saint-Endreol sit in the eastern Var behind the Cote d'Azur, with Barbaroux near Brignoles in the central Var and Fregate on the coast near Bandol; Pont Royal and Servanes lie west toward the Alpilles and the Luberon. Most pair easily within an hour's drive. Designers and awards verified June 2026.
