Reserva Conchal
Robert Trent Jones II carved Reserva Conchal into the dry tropical forest of the Guanacaste coast in 1997, the first Audubon certified course in Costa Rica. A par 71 of about 7,030 yards, it threads lakes, ravines and creeks through a celebrated beach resort a short drive from Tamarindo.

The verdict
Robert Trent Jones II opened Reserva Conchal in 1997 on a parcel of dry tropical forest behind Playa Conchal, and it remains one of the most polished resort courses on the Guanacaste coast. The layout earned recognition as the first Audubon certified golf course in Costa Rica, and the conditioning, on lush Bermuda fairways and large manicured greens, is among the best in the region.
Lakes and ravines accentuate the routing and put a premium on accurate tee shots and well judged approaches. Now managed under the Troon banner and paired with a Westin beach resort, it is an easy course to build a Guanacaste golf trip around, about 20 minutes from Tamarindo and 45 minutes from Liberia airport. Tee times are open to resort guests and visiting golfers, so plan ahead in the dry season.

The holes worth the trip
Reserva Conchal opens through the trees before the land tilts toward a series of lakes and barrancas that frame the middle of the round. The fairways are generous in the landing areas but the trouble is real, with water and native scrub waiting for the loose shot, and the large Bermuda greens reward a confident, well struck approach.
The stretch around the water holes is where the round is won or lost, the carries inviting but unforgiving and the green complexes set to test pace and line. In the heat of the Guanacaste dry season the turf runs firm and the wind off the Pacific adds a layer of strategy that the scorecard does not show.
The closing holes return through the forest toward the clubhouse, a fair finish that gives back birdies to the player who has kept the ball in play. It is a course that rewards course management over raw power, and the setting, between dry forest and one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, is hard to beat.
