Le Geant, Mont Tremblant

The signature round of one of Eastern Canada's great mountain resorts. Thomas McBroom carved Le Geant into the slopes above Mont Tremblant in 1995, a par 72 that plunges and climbs across the mountainside with the peaks of the Laurentians filling the horizon. Big elevation change, big views and a holiday round that lives up to its name, the giant.

The verdict

Mont Tremblant is the headline four season resort of the Laurentian Mountains, about 90 minutes north of Montreal, and Le Geant is its golfing centerpiece. Thomas McBroom, one of Canada's most prolific architects, opened it in 1995 and used the mountainside to full effect, routing holes that drop from elevated tees, climb back toward the summit and turn through stands of maple and birch, with the resort village and the peaks beyond as a constant backdrop. It is scenic, big hitting holiday golf.

A par 72 of about 6,800 yards, Le Geant is not the longest course you will play, but the elevation change makes club selection a genuine puzzle and gives the round its drama, with downhill tee shots that seem to hang in the air and uphill approaches that ask for an extra club or two. McBroom balanced the spectacle with fair, well shaped greens, so it rewards the holiday golfer who thinks their way around rather than simply overpowering it. Paired with the resort's sister course and the village's restaurants and spas, it is one of the most complete golf escapes in Quebec.

The holes worth the trip

Le Geant is all about the land. Thomas McBroom set tees high on the mountainside so the opening holes drop away beneath you, the ball flying further than the yardage suggests, then routed the course up and across the slope so the round is a constant negotiation with gravity and gradient. The views open up at almost every turn, over the village, the ski runs and the rolling peaks of the Laurentians, and on a clear autumn day, with the maples turning, there are few prettier rounds in the country.

The challenge is judgment as much as ball striking. Downhill par 4s tempt you to take on more than the slope allows, while uphill approaches need an honest extra club, and the greens, cut into the hillside, hold subtle borrows that follow the fall of the mountain. McBroom framed the holes with the natural forest rather than heavy bunkering, so accuracy off the tee keeps the round flowing and the wayward shot finds the trees.

The closing holes work back toward the base of the mountain and the village, finishing a round that is as much an experience of place as a test of golf. It is the kind of course you remember for the setting, and want to play again the next morning.

Where to stay nearby

The obvious base is the Mont Tremblant pedestrian village at the foot of the mountain, a lively, alpine style resort with hotels, condos, restaurants and spas a short ride from the first tee, and a gondola, lake and trails to keep non golfers and families busy. Staying in the village unlocks the best tee time access and the resort's stay and play packages.

Le Geant anchors a Laurentians golf trip and pairs naturally with the resort's sister course and the wider Quebec golf scene for a longer stay, including the grand Charlevoix course at Le Manoir Richelieu further down the St Lawrence.
