The verdict

The golf at Le Manoir Richelieu is as old as resort golf in Quebec gets, laid out by the British architect Herbert Strong and opened in July 1925 in the presence of the former United States president William Howard Taft. It sits high above the St. Lawrence at La Malbaie in Charlevoix, where the river is wide as a sea and the Laurentian hills roll down to meet it.

Between 2002 and 2004 the architect Darrell Huxham reworked Strong's course and added a third nine, so the resort now offers 27 holes across the St-Laurent, Richelieu and Tadoussac loops, the championship eighteen running to about 6,326 yards at a par 72. It is a public resort course attached to the grand chateau hotel, and the scenery alone makes it one of the most memorable rounds in the country.

The holes worth the trip

The river is the star. Hole after hole frames the wide St. Lawrence far below, and the elevation changes across the bluff demand careful club selection as the wind funnels off the water.

Strong's classical bones survive in the green sites Huxham restored, while the newer holes use the dramatic terrain for some genuine downhill drama. The bentgrass surfaces run true, and the views can be a real distraction over a tricky putt.

The three nines give plenty of variety across a long day, and the closing holes climb back toward the turreted chateau that crowns the bluff. Few resort rounds in Canada combine this much history and scenery.
