Tobiano
Tobiano is the finest public golf in British Columbia's interior, a Thomas McBroom design that tumbles across the grassland bluffs high above Kamloops Lake. Opened in 2007 and named Canada's Best New Course, it plays to a par 72 of 7,367 yards through canyons and over ridges, with the blue lake as a constant backdrop.

The verdict
Tobiano is McBroom at his most dramatic. Set on the high, rolling grassland above Kamloops Lake, the course uses huge natural movement, deep canyons, sweeping ridges and tumbling fairways to deliver one spectacular hole after another, all framed by the vivid blue of the lake below. It opened in 2007 to immediate acclaim as Canada's Best New Course, and it remains the most highly rated of McBroom's many designs.
For the travelling golfer it is a genuine destination round and the centrepiece of golf in the Kamloops area. The conditioning is excellent on the firm, fast interior turf, the scenery is enormous, and as a public access course it is far easier to play than many courses of this quality. Pair it with the wider golf of the Thompson and Okanagan valleys and you have one of the strongest interior British Columbia itineraries in the country.

The holes worth the trip
McBroom routed Tobiano to make the most of an extraordinary site, and the drama starts on the first tee with Kamloops Lake spread out below. The fairways roll and heave across the grassland bluffs, the canyons force you to choose a line and commit, and the elevation changes give long views and exhilarating tee shots throughout the round.
It is a strong test from the back tees at over 7,300 yards, with five par threes including the cliffhanger seventh, but the multiple tees keep it fair for every level. The firm, fast interior turf encourages the running game, the greens are large and contoured, and the wind across the open ground adds another variable that rewards control over power.
The signature stretch includes the par three seventh, played from a clifftop tee with the lake far below, and the par five 13th, with its bold carry over a vast canyon. These are the kind of heroic, photogenic holes that make Tobiano so memorable, and that have kept it at the top of British Columbia public golf since the day it opened.

Where to stay nearby
Most golfers playing Tobiano base themselves in Kamloops, just east of the course, where a good range of hotels and easy airport access make it a convenient hub for the interior. The dry, sunny climate and the cluster of strong courses nearby make the Thompson Valley a fine short golf break in its own right.
For a wider trip the interior of British Columbia rewards a road based itinerary, pairing Tobiano with the leading courses of the Okanagan Valley to the south and the wineries and lakes that go with them. We can build the lodging, tee times and transfers around whichever route through the interior suits you best.
