The verdict
Blackhawk Golf Club opened in 2003 to a design by Rod Whitman, the Alberta native who would later co design Cabot Links, on the dramatic banks of the North Saskatchewan River at Spruce Grove, just southwest of Edmonton. It was among the first modern minimalist layouts built in Canada and helped reshape what golfers there expected from new design.
The golf is wide, strategic and natural, generous fairways set against rugged bunkering and dynamic, contoured green sites that reward angles and thought over sheer power. A par 71 of 6,835 yards, it is consistently rated among Canada’s finest courses. It has since reincorporated as a private members club, so a round generally comes through a member or an arranged invitation.

The holes worth the trip
Blackhawk uses the folds of the North Saskatchewan River valley to fine effect, the routing rising and falling across a site Whitman shaped with a light hand. The fairways are wide, but the rugged, sandy bunkering and the tilt of the greens demand the right line off the tee to open the best angle in.
The minimalist greens are the heart of the course, full of movement and run offs that turn an indifferent approach into an awkward up and down. It is a thinking player’s layout where position and pace matter more than length, much like Whitman’s later links work at Cabot.
The closing holes play firm and strategic back toward the clubhouse, the river never far away. Blackhawk rewards the golfer who plots a route and controls the ball on the ground, and it gives back one of the most natural and admired rounds in western Canada.
