The verdict
Greystone is a strong, honest public course on the doorstep of Toronto. It was designed by Doug Carrick, one of Canada's most respected architects, and opened in 1991 on rolling ground at the base of the Niagara Escarpment in Milton. Carrick used the natural slopes, mature woodland and limestone of the site to build a course that looks gentle from the first tee and bites from the back markers.
It plays as a par 72 of about 6,864 yards, but the number that matters is the slope of 143 from the tips, a clear signal that this is a test for the better player. For a visiting golfer based in or passing through the Greater Toronto Area, Greystone is a rewarding, good value round that pairs naturally with the marquee courses nearby.

The holes worth the trip
Carrick routed Greystone to make the most of the escarpment land, with elevation changes that frame tee shots and demand careful judgment into the greens. The fairways tumble through corridors of mature trees, and the limestone that gives the club its name shows up in rock faces and firm, fast lies that reward a clean strike.
The greens are the defense. They are quick, well contoured and pitched to repel the loose approach, which is where that slope of 143 comes from. Miss on the wrong side and an up and down becomes real work; find the correct quadrant and birdies are there. The par 3s in particular ask for committed, precise iron play.
At about 6,864 yards it is not overlong, but it asks for position over power, especially from the back tees where the angles tighten. Tee it forward and it becomes a thoroughly enjoyable round with plenty of variety; play it from the tips and it is one of the sterner public tests within easy reach of Toronto.
