Hamilton Golf and Country Club

Known to members simply as Ancaster, Hamilton Golf and Country Club is one of the great parkland courses of Canada: a Harry Colt design from 1914, lovingly restored by Martin Ebert, and a seven time Canadian Open host that the world's best still rate among the country's very finest tests.

The verdict

If you want to understand why Canadian golf is taken seriously, Hamilton is the course to study. Laid out in 1914 by Harry Colt, the English architect behind Sunningdale's New course, Wentworth and so much of golf's golden age, it occupies rolling, wooded land in Ancaster on the edge of the city of Hamilton, and it has the unmistakable Colt signature: holes that flow with the contours, greens set on natural plateaus and bunkering that asks a question off every tee. The original eighteen, now played as the West and South nines, remain the heart of the club.

A third nine, the East, was added by the Canadian architect Robbie Robinson in 1974, giving the club 27 holes and the flexibility to host major championships while members play on. In 2019 the club completed a comprehensive restoration led by Martin Ebert, the architect entrusted with many Open Championship links, work that earned recognition as one of the finest restorations of its year. Hamilton has hosted the Canadian Open seven times, most recently in 2024, and the verdict of the professionals who play it is consistent: this is championship golf of genuine quality, not a course flattered by its history.

Designer, opening year, restoration and championship setup verified June 2026 from the club, the PGA Tour and leading course databases: Harry Colt original 18 opened 1914, Robbie Robinson East nine 1974, Martin Ebert restoration completed 2019, championship par 70 at about 7,084 yards for the Canadian Open. Hamilton is a private members club and does not offer public green fee play, so no visitor fee is quoted.

The holes worth knowing

What sets Hamilton apart is how natural it feels. Colt routed the course to use the land's gentle rises and falls rather than fight them, so fairways tumble and climb and the greens sit where the ground invites them, often on subtle shelves that repel a tired approach. The Ebert restoration recaptured lost bunker shapes and green edges and reintroduced width and angles, so the modern course rewards the player who thinks about position rather than simply hitting it hard.

The closing stretch is where Canadian Opens are won and lost. The par 3s are exacting, the longer two shotters demand a brave drive to open up the green, and the greens themselves, firm and contoured, expose any approach struck without conviction. When the championship returned in 2024 the leaderboard told the story of a course that resists low scoring without resorting to tricks: it simply keeps asking honest, increasingly difficult questions.

For all its toughness from the tips, Hamilton is also a wonderful members' course, walkable and varied across its three nines, and a reminder that the best classic designs flatter the everyday game while still being able to host the world's best when the tees go back.

Where to stay nearby

Hamilton sits between Toronto and the Niagara Peninsula, so a golf trip built around the region rarely lacks for bases. The city of Hamilton and nearby Ancaster offer comfortable hotels close to the club, while many visiting golfers prefer to stay in Niagara on the Lake, pairing golf with the wineries and the falls, or in Toronto to fold in the city's championship courses.

Because Hamilton itself is private, the practical way to experience this stretch of Ontario golf is to build a trip around the courses you can access and treat a Hamilton round, if a member connection allows, as the jewel. Our wider Canada coverage and the best courses in Canada list are the places to start shaping that itinerary.
