Aravell Golf Andorra

The verdict

Aravell is the golf course of the Andorra Pyrenees, even though it does not technically lie inside the principality. It sits at Aravell, about 5 kilometers from La Seu d'Urgell and some 15 kilometers from the Andorran border, in the Catalan province of Lleida. It carries the Andorra name because it serves the principality and was financed from there, and for the traveling golfer that distinction matters little: this is where you play when a ski or mountain trip to Andorra wants a round of golf in the mix. Opened in 1997, it is a par 71 of about 6,155 meters laid across the Pyrenean foothills, with the high peaks framing almost every shot.

The design is credited to the two time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal, though attribution varies across sources, so we present it as reported. What is not in doubt is the setting and the test. The mountain ground gives the course constant elevation change and a real demand on club selection, and the thin air at altitude sends the ball a touch further than sea level golfers expect. It is good enough to host the Aravell Golf Andorra Open, the Alps Tour event that gives the course its competitive credentials, and memorable enough that the scenery alone justifies the trip.

The holes worth the trip

The land is the star at Aravell. The routing climbs and falls through the Pyrenean foothills, so few lies are flat and the views change with every hole, from the river valley below to the snow capped peaks above. Elevation change is the defining feature of the round: uphill holes play a club or two longer than the card suggests, downhill holes need careful judgment, and the altitude itself adds carry, so reading each shot is half the skill. It is a course that asks you to think and to adapt rather than simply overpower.

At about 6,155 meters off the back, Aravell has enough length to test a strong player, which is why it can stage an Alps Tour event, but the multiple tees keep it fair for the visitor. The greens sit in the contours of the hillside, and approach play, judging the slope and the run, is where scores are made or lost. Through it all the mountain backdrop gives the round a sense of occasion that few courses in Spain or the Pyrenees can match.

Aravell suits the golfer who wants something different: a mountain round at altitude with spectacular scenery, ideally folded into a wider trip to Andorra or the Catalan Pyrenees. It is a destination in its own right rather than one of a cluster, so plan a day around it and let the setting do the rest.

La Seu d'Urgell, the historic cathedral town just down the valley, is the natural base, with a comfortable choice of hotels and a parador, and the duty free shopping and mountain resorts of Andorra are a short drive up the road.
