Hidden Gem Golf Courses in Spain

Most golfers know Valderrama and the Costa del Sol package strip. Fewer know the quieter courses that hold their own against them, a links by a Valencia lagoon, a Mallorcan masterpiece in the vines, a seaside layout under a lighthouse. Here are six Spanish gems worth the detour, ranked, with our verdict on each.

What counts as a hidden gem

A hidden gem is not a secret nobody has heard of. It is a course good enough to headline a trip that somehow gets skipped, because it sits away from the marquee resorts, because the booking is quieter, or simply because the famous names down the coast soak up the attention. Spain is full of them. Beyond the Sotogrande heavyweights lies a Javier Arana links by a Valencia lagoon, two of the best modern courses in the Mediterranean on Mallorca, an Olazabal layout outside Seville and the oldest course on the Costa Brava. Each one rewards the golfer willing to drive a little further than the guidebook suggests.

Every fact here, the designers and the opening years, was checked at the time of writing in June 2026 by the GolfForKings editorial desk. Green fees move with the season, so where we mention them they are indicative for 2026 only and you should always confirm directly before booking. The verdicts are ours. If you want a Spain trip built around these quieter courses rather than the obvious ones, our concierge can string them into a route and cost it to the head.

6 hidden gem golf courses in Spain

01

El Saler

Javier Arana, 1968 · Valencia · Parador hotel on site

Our pick and one of the great undersung courses in Europe, El Saler runs through pine and dune along a lagoon south of Valencia, laid out by the master Spanish architect Javier Arana in 1968. Its seaside stretch plays as pure links, the inland holes weave through umbrella pines, and it has long been rated among the finest courses on the continent, yet it stays gloriously quiet and is attached to a state run Parador so you can stay on site. For a connoisseur's round away from the resort crowds, nothing in Spain beats it.

02

Son Gual

Thomas Himmel, 2007 · Palma de Mallorca

The best course on Mallorca and a modern masterpiece, Son Gual was designed by Thomas Himmel and opened in 2007 on rolling country east of Palma, framed by olive groves, vineyards and dry stone walls. The conditioning is immaculate, the bunkering bold and the whole experience polished, from the practice ground to the clubhouse, and it is reportedly Rafael Nadal's favourite course on the island. Less than twenty minutes from Palma airport, it is an easy and rewarding detour that most package golfers never make.

03

Club de Golf Alcanada

Robert Trent Jones Jr, 2003 · Alcudia, north Mallorca

The only course on Mallorca set right on the sea, Alcanada was the vision of Hans-Peter Porsche and designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, opening in 2003 at the island's northern tip near Alcudia. The bay, the rolling hills and the nineteenth century Alcanada lighthouse offshore, the club's emblem, give it some of the best views in Spanish golf, and the layout more than matches the setting. Quieter than the Palma courses and a little further to reach, it is a gem that repays the drive north.

04

Real Club de Golf de Sevilla

Jose Maria Olazabal, 1992 · Alcala de Guadaira, Seville

The finest inland course in Andalusia and the one tournament golfers know but tourists skip, Real Club de Golf de Sevilla was designed by two time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal and opened in 1992. It has hosted the Spanish Open several times and a World Golf Championship, a long, strategic parkland test with water and clever green complexes that stands comparison with anything on the coast. Paired with the city of Seville rather than a beach resort, it suits the golfer who wants culture with the golf.

05

Aloha Golf Club

Javier Arana, 1975 · Nueva Andalucia, Marbella

The classic that lives in Valderrama's shadow, Aloha sits in Marbella's Nueva Andalucia golf valley, a Javier Arana design opened in 1975 and finished by Enrique Canales after Arana's death. Mature, tree lined and beautifully routed, it is a purer test than many of the flashier modern courses around it and a regular host of professional events, yet a round here costs far less than the famous name next door. For old school parkland quality on the Costa del Sol, it is the insider's choice.

06

Golf Platja de Pals

F.W. Hawtree, 1966 · Pals, Costa Brava

The oldest course on the Costa Brava and a charming throwback, Platja de Pals was laid out by the British architect Fred Hawtree and opened in 1966, winding through tall umbrella pines just back from the beach near the medieval village of Pals. It hosted the Spanish Open in 1972 and has a quiet, traditional character a world away from the manicured stadium courses inland. Pair it with PGA Catalunya and the Girona coast for a north of Spain trip with real variety.

Where they are, and indicative costs

These gems are spread the length of the Spanish Mediterranean rather than clustered in one resort belt. El Saler is just south of Valencia, Son Gual and Alcanada are on Mallorca, near Palma and Alcudia respectively, Real Club de Golf de Sevilla sits outside Seville in the southwest, Aloha is in Marbella, and Platja de Pals is up on the Costa Brava. Reaching several on one trip means choosing a region rather than a single base, so most golfers pick the island, the south or the Costa Brava and build from there.

Spain hidden gem questions

What is the most underrated golf course in Spain?

Our pick is El Saler near Valencia, a Javier Arana design from 1968 that plays partly as links and has long ranked among the best courses in continental Europe, yet stays far quieter than the Costa del Sol names. On Mallorca, Son Gual and Alcanada are both world class and skipped by most package golfers, and outside Seville the Olazabal designed Real Club de Golf de Sevilla is a genuine tournament course tourists rarely play.

Are hidden gem courses cheaper to play?

Often, yes. Because they sit away from the marquee resorts and carry quieter demand, courses such as Aloha, Platja de Pals and Real Club de Golf de Sevilla can cost considerably less than the famous names nearby, while still offering top tier golf. Fees move with the season, so always confirm current green fees directly before booking.

Can you combine these gems with the famous courses?

Yes, and it makes for a stronger trip. Aloha pairs naturally with the Sotogrande heavyweights on a Costa del Sol week, Platja de Pals sits beside PGA Catalunya on the Costa Brava, and the two Mallorca gems anchor an island trip on their own. We build routes that mix the headline courses with the quieter ones around your travel days.
