The Best Luxury Golf Resorts in the World

A great golf resort is more than a great course. It is the room, the table, the spa and the service wrapped around the golf, the kind of place you would happily send a non golfer for a week. From Pebble Beach to Adare Manor, here are the eight luxury golf resorts we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each.

How we chose them

This list is judged on the whole experience, not the golf alone. We weighted the quality and depth of the courses heavily, because that is why golfers come, but also the hotel, the food, the spa and the service, and how complete a stay each resort delivers. The best of them give a serious golfer several days of varied championship golf and give everyone else a holiday worth taking on its own. That combination is rarer than it sounds.

Every fact here, from designers and opening years to host events, was checked at the time of writing. The verdicts are ours, and the order reflects our editors' view rather than any single published list, so reasonable people will reorder it. These are premium resorts with premium green fees, and at most of them a room is the surest route to a tee time. If you want any of them built into a costed trip, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Pebble Beach Resorts, United States

Monterey Peninsula, California · 4 courses plus par 3

The complete luxury golf resort. Pebble Beach pairs the most famous ocean course in the game, the 1919 Pebble Beach Golf Links, with Spyglass Hill, Spanish Bay and Del Monte, plus a par 3 course, three grand hotels and a spa on the Monterey Peninsula. Multiple US Opens have been won here, and a stay buys priority access to the marquee round. It is expensive and busy, and the standard of golf, lodging and setting together is unmatched. Our number one.

02

Pinehurst Resort, United States

North Carolina · 9 courses, No. 2 by Donald Ross

The cradle of American resort golf and the deepest course roster anywhere, with nine layouts in the Sandhills of North Carolina. The crown is No. 2, Donald Ross's masterpiece of crowned greens and a regular US Open venue now anchored as a permanent host site. The Carolina Hotel, the village and the history give the stay a sense of occasion few resorts can match. A week here barely scratches the golf. The essential American golf pilgrimage.

03

Gleneagles, Scotland

Perthshire · King's, Queen's and PGA Centenary

The grande dame of Scottish resort golf, a vast Perthshire estate with three courses, the James Braid designed King's and Queen's and the Jack Nicklaus PGA Centenary that hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup. The hotel is a five star institution, the food among the best in any resort, and the estate offers shooting, riding and a renowned spa. Inland rather than links, but as a complete luxury golf and country house stay it has no British equal. A bucket list base.

04

Adare Manor, Ireland

County Limerick · Tom Fazio redesign, 2018 · Ryder Cup 2027

Ireland's most opulent golf resort, a restored Gothic manor on the Maigue with a course rebuilt by Tom Fazio and reopened in 2018 to immediate acclaim. It will host the Ryder Cup in 2027, a measure of how far the golf has come. The hotel, the rooms and the service are five star in every detail, and the parkland course is immaculate. For golf and luxury in equal measure, it is the finest stay in Ireland today. Book well ahead.

Plan an Adare Manor trip

05

Bandon Dunes, United States

Oregon coast · 5 championship links plus par 3

The purest golf resort on the list, five world ranked links courses and a par 3 layout strung along the wild Oregon coast, built on the belief that golf belongs on rugged, windswept land. The lodging is comfortable rather than palatial and the luxury is in the golf itself, walking only, caddie carried, as close to Scotland as North America gets. For the dedicated golfer it is paradise, and the on site dining and lodges have grown to match. A links lover's dream.

06

Fancourt, South Africa

Garden Route · three Gary Player courses

South Africa's premier golf resort, set on the Garden Route with three Gary Player designed courses, the standout being The Links, a man made links that hosted the 2003 Presidents Cup and rates among the country's best. The hotel and spa are five star, the setting between mountains and sea is superb, and it pairs naturally with a wider South African golf and safari trip. The most complete luxury golf resort in Africa. Confirm access to The Links before booking.

Caribbean · The Green Monkey and Country Club by Tom Fazio

The Caribbean's byword for luxury, a legendary beach resort on Barbados with two Tom Fazio courses, the exclusive Green Monkey carved into an old quarry and the championship Country Club. The hotel is among the most celebrated in the world, the service famously discreet, and the golf is reserved largely for guests. For a couple or family that wants world class beach, spa and a memorable round or two, the maths of the stay is the luxury. Premium throughout.

The hotel, spa and dining are among the finest in southern Europe, and the course is immaculate and rarely crowded. For luxury golf within an easy flight of much of Europe, it is the pick of the Spanish coast. Book ahead in season.

Luxury resort questions

What is the best luxury golf resort in the world?

Pebble Beach Resorts on California's Monterey Peninsula is our number one, combining the most famous ocean course in golf with three more layouts, grand hotels and a spa. Pinehurst in North Carolina and Gleneagles in Scotland are its closest rivals for the complete resort experience. The right choice depends on whether you want links, parkland or ocean golf. Reasonable people will reorder the list.

Which luxury golf resort has the most courses?

Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina has the most, with nine courses including the storied Donald Ross designed No. 2, which has hosted multiple US Opens. Pebble Beach Resorts offers four full courses plus a par 3 layout, and Bandon Dunes in Oregon has five championship links plus a par 3 course. All three can fill a week of varied golf without leaving the property.

Do you have to stay at the resort to play these courses?

In most cases a stay buys the best, and sometimes the only, access. Pebble Beach gives priority and better rates to hotel guests, Adare Manor and Gleneagles courses are reserved largely for residents, and Bandon is built around its on site lodging. Day visitor tee times exist at some but are limited and dear. Booking a room is usually the surest route, and green fees are premium. Always confirm before booking.

Which luxury resorts are hosting major events?

Adare Manor in Ireland, redesigned by Tom Fazio and reopened in 2018, will host the Ryder Cup in 2027. Gleneagles hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup on its PGA Centenary Course. Pinehurst No. 2 is a regular US Open venue, and Finca Cortesin in Spain hosted the 2023 Solheim Cup. A major pedigree is one good marker of a resort's golf, though never the only one.
