From the Sacred Nine of Suffolk to a Tiger Woods par 3 above Carmel Bay, ranked with our verdicts and the reasons to go.
01
Royal Worlington and Newmarket, England
Suffolk · Tom Dunn, 1893 · heathland
The Sacred Nine, a name coined by the writer Bernard Darwin in 1928 and never bettered. Laid out by Tom Dunn and founded in 1893, this Suffolk heathland has been home to Cambridge University golf for over a century and is regularly called the finest nine-hole course in the world. The clever routing and superb greens reward repeat loops. The benchmark every other nine is measured against.
02
Sweetens Cove, Tennessee
South Pittsburg · King-Collins, 2014 · modern
The modern cult classic, carved by King-Collins out of a featureless Tennessee floodplain and opened in 2014. Wild, bold greens, vast waste areas and several alternative routings have turned a remote nine an hour from Chattanooga into a genuine pilgrimage for anyone who loves golf architecture. Go round twice and you will want to go again.
03
The Dunes Club, Michigan
New Buffalo · Dick Nugent · private
Mike Keiser's first golf project, built on 60 acres of dunes near Lake Michigan seven years before Bandon Dunes, to a Dick Nugent design. Ron Whitten of Golf Digest has called it the best nine-hole course in the country. Fiercely private and hard to reach, but a landmark in the rise of minimalist American golf.
04
Whitinsville Golf Club, Massachusetts
Whitinsville · Donald Ross, 1925 · parkland
Widely considered the finest nine-hole work of Donald Ross, opened in 1925 in central Massachusetts. A pure, classic parkland whose closing ninth has been named among America's best holes. Proof that a single Ross nine can hold its own against almost any eighteen in New England.
05
Wawashkamo, Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island, Michigan · Alex Smith, 1898 · links
Laid out in 1898 by Alex Smith, a Carnoustie born two time US Open champion, Wawashkamo is the oldest continuously played course in Michigan and a Golf Digest Historic Landmark. Set on car free Mackinac Island and reached by ferry and horse buggy, it is a true Scottish style links frozen in time. A trip back through golf history.
06
Winter Park Golf Club, Florida
Winter Park · Johns and Rhebb restoration, 2016 · urban park
A 1914 muni north of Orlando reborn in 2016 for just over a million dollars by Riley Johns and Keith Rhebb. At par 35 and around 2,480 yards it weaves past churches, a cemetery and an active rail line in the spirit of St Andrews or North Berwick. The model for what a community nine can be, and the most fun cheap round in America.
07
The Hay, Pebble Beach
Monterey Peninsula · Tiger Woods and TGR Design, 2021 · par 3
Tiger Woods reimagined this nine-hole par 3 across from Pebble Beach's first tee, opening in 2021 on the site of Peter Hay's 1957 original. With holes from 47 to 106 yards, including a replica of Pebble's famous seventh and a sprawling putting course, it is pure enjoyment with the bag light. Children under twelve play free.
08
The Cradle, Pinehurst
Pinehurst · Gil Hanse, 2017 · par 3
Gil Hanse's nine-hole par 3 at Pinehurst, opened in 2017 and billed as the most fun ten acres in golf. Holes from 56 to 127 yards over rumpled sandhills and deep bunkers make it the ideal evening round with music and a drink in hand. The course that helped launch the short course revival.
09
Threetops, Treetops Resort
Gaylord, Michigan · Rick Smith, 1992 · par 3
Rick Smith's nine-hole par 3 in northern Michigan, opened in 1992 and frequently ranked the best par 3 course in America. It hosted the televised ESPN Par 3 Shootout for eight years, where Lee Trevino aced the seventh for a million dollar prize in 2001. Dramatic elevation changes and big views round out our nine.
