The Best Golf for a Society Trip in Mauritius

Mauritius packs championship golf, designer signatures and five star beach resorts onto one small Indian Ocean island, which makes it a near perfect society destination: serious courses, a luxury holiday and everything close together. These are the seven we would build a society trip around, ranked, with our verdict on each and where to base the party.

How we chose them

For a society, we weight the headline appeal a group will remember, the strength of the cluster on each coast so you can play several from one base, the quality of the resort, and how well a course takes a block of golfers of every standard. Mauritius is unusual in that almost every course sits within a five star resort estate, so the golf and the lodging are often one and the same, which makes the logistics of a group trip beautifully simple.

Every fact here, from designers to host events such as the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, was checked at the time of writing against the clubs and recognized sources. The verdicts and the order are our editors' view of what makes a great group trip rather than a pure ranking, so a society chasing only the toughest tests will reorder it. Some courses, including the newest links, are reserved for resort guests. If you want any of these built into a costed itinerary with grouped tee times, resorts and transfers, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Heritage Golf Club, Le Chateau

Bel Ombre · south coast · resort

Widely rated the best course on the island and the strongest society base. Le Chateau runs through the Bel Ombre estate on the unspoiled south coast, two contrasting nines with real elevation change, mountain and ocean views and a championship test that hosted the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open on the European Tour. With the Heritage resorts and the new links in the same estate, a society can settle in one place and play two excellent courses without moving.

02

Anahita Golf Club

Ernie Els · east coast · resort

Ernie Els designed Anahita along the lagoon on the east coast, eighteen immaculate holes with water in play and views across to Ile aux Cerfs. It has co hosted the Mauritius Open and is a polished, strategic championship round set in a luxury resort estate, which makes it an ideal east coast base for a society. Pair it with the island golf next door and you have two of the finest rounds in the Indian Ocean from one stay.

03

Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club

Bernhard Langer · east coast island

The most spectacular round in Mauritius and the one your society will talk about for years. Bernhard Langer routed this course across its own island off the east coast, reached only by a golf boat shuttle, the holes carved through tropical forest and skirting turquoise lagoons. It is dramatic, exotic and unforgettable, the definition of a bucket list golf experience, and it pairs naturally with Anahita for an east coast trip.

04

La Reserve Golf Links

Bel Ombre · opened 2023 · resort

The island's newest course, opened in late 2023 in the hills above the Heritage estate at Bel Ombre, a links inspired layout that climbs into the highlands with sweeping views back to the sea. Reserved for Heritage resort guests and members, it gives a society staying on the south coast a second, very different round to pair with Le Chateau. Bold, modern and high on the lists already, it makes Bel Ombre a true two course base.

05

Tamarina Golf Club

Rodney Wright · west coast

On the sunnier, drier west coast near Tamarin, this Rodney Wright design is a par 72 championship course set beneath the dramatic Montagne du Rempart, the holes running between the mountains and the sea. It is scenic, generous and a fine round for a mixed group, and it anchors a west coast base with the beaches and dolphin bays of Tamarin and the Le Morne peninsula nearby. A relaxed, beautiful day out.

06

Paradis Golf Club

Le Morne · west coast · resort

A flat, walkable resort course on the Le Morne peninsula in the southwest, wrapped around the lagoon beneath the UNESCO listed Le Morne Brabant mountain, one of the most beautiful settings in Mauritius. It is gentle and enjoyable rather than a brutal test, exactly right for a society that wants its golf as part of a beach holiday, and the Beachcomber resort makes a comfortable base for the party.

07

Mont Choisy Le Golf

North coast

The standout course in the north, a modern eighteen set among sugar cane and lakes a short drive from the lively resort town of Grand Baie. It is a well conditioned, strategic round with good variety, and the north's restaurants, beaches and nightlife make it the most sociable base on the island for a group that likes its evenings. A strong choice for a society that wants golf and a buzzing town close together.

Mauritius society golf questions

What is the best golf course in Mauritius?

Heritage Le Chateau in the Bel Ombre estate on the south coast is widely rated the best course in Mauritius and has hosted the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, a European Tour event. For pure spectacle, Bernhard Langer's Ile aux Cerfs, reached by boat shuttle to its own island, is the most memorable round on the island.

Where should a golf society base itself in Mauritius?

The south coast around Bel Ombre is the strongest base for a society, with Heritage Le Chateau and the newer La Reserve Links in one estate of resorts. The east coast pairs Anahita and Ile aux Cerfs, and the west around Tamarin and Le Morne adds Tamarina and Paradis. Most societies base on one coast and play out from there.

When is the best time for a golf trip to Mauritius?

Mauritius is a year round destination, but the cooler, drier months from May to November are the prime window for golf, with comfortable temperatures and lower humidity. The summer from December to April is hotter and wetter with a cyclone risk, though still playable. The shoulder months either side offer good value and good weather.

Is Mauritius good for a society golf trip?

Very. The island combines championship courses with five star beach resorts, so a society gets serious golf and a luxury holiday in one trip, with everything close together on a small island. Several courses sit within resort estates that can house the whole party. Our concierge arranges grouped tee times, resorts and transfers and costs it to the head.
