The Best Golf Courses Designed by Seve Ballesteros

Seve shaped few courses for a player of his fame, but the ones he left carry his fingerprints: bold, imaginative, asking the recovery shots he made famous. These are the seven Ballesteros designs we would most want to play, from his Atlantic masterpiece at Novo Sancti Petri to a waterfall in central Scotland, ranked with our verdicts.

How we chose

Severiano Ballesteros, the most charismatic golfer Europe has produced, turned to design in the late 1980s and built comparatively few courses before his death in May 2011. That scarcity is part of the appeal: to play a Seve layout is to play golf shaped by one of the game's great imaginations, full of the angles, risks and recovery shots that defined his own play. Our ranking rewards the designs that best deliver that experience, weighing design quality, conditioning and setting first, then a real sense of occasion and the practicalities of getting on as a visitor.

We have stuck to courses where the Ballesteros design credit is a matter of record, played on resort or pay-and-play layouts a travelling golfer can realistically build a trip around. They span the Costa de la Luz and Costa del Sol in Spain, the Portuguese Silver Coast, the Irish midlands, Provence and two corners of the United Kingdom. The verdicts are ours; the designers, dates and tournament histories we cite are documented.

The seven best Seve Ballesteros designs

01

Real Novo Sancti Petri, Spain

Costa de la Luz, Chiclana · inaugurated 1990 · par 72

Seve's first design in Europe and, for many, his finest, inaugurated in December 1990 on the Costa de la Luz near Cadiz. Set among umbrella pines with several holes running out toward the Atlantic and the long beach at Chiclana, it is generous off the tee but full of the strategic angles and short-game tests Seve loved, and it later earned royal status as Real Novo Sancti Petri. Pair it with the Costa de la Luz beaches and it makes a complete southern Spain trip.

02

The Heritage, Killenard, Ireland

County Laois · Ballesteros and Jeff Howes, 2004 · par 72

Seve's Irish course, a par 72 championship parkland laid out with Jeff Howes through rolling County Laois countryside an hour from Dublin, and the host of the 2007 Seve Trophy. Long, handsome and well watered, with water and mature woodland in play and a five-star hotel and spa alongside, it is the most polished resort round he designed and the easiest to build a stay-and-play break around in the Irish midlands.

03

Pont Royal, France

Provence, Mallemort · opened 1992 · par 72

The only Seve course in France, opened in 1992 in the Provencal countryside between Aix-en-Provence and the Luberon. Cut through garrigue and rocky outcrops with dramatic elevation change and big views, it long hosted European Tour and Challenge Tour events and remains a genuine examination, demanding precise positioning off the tee. A natural centrepiece for a Provence golf-and-wine week.

04

Royal Obidos, Portugal

Silver Coast · Ballesteros design · par 72

Seve's Portuguese gem, laid out on rolling ground near the medieval town of Obidos on the Silver Coast north of Lisbon, with views over the Obidos lagoon and the Atlantic. A modern, undulating par 72 with generous fairways and well-defended greens, it sits alongside a five-star resort and pairs neatly with the Lisbon coast courses for a varied Portuguese trip.

05

Los Arqueros, Spain

Costa del Sol, Benahavis · Ballesteros, 1991

Seve's first design on the Costa del Sol, opened in 1991 on the hillsides above Benahavis behind Marbella. Tight, tumbling and dramatic, with steep changes in elevation and panoramic views down to the Mediterranean, it is a fun, characterful round rather than a long championship test, and its easy access from the Marbella resorts makes it a popular fixture on a Costa del Sol golf week.

06

The Shire London, England

Hertfordshire · opened 2007 · the only Seve course in England

The only Ballesteros design in England, opened in 2007 on the edge of London near Barnet. A spacious, modern parkland on undulating ground, it is a pay-and-play course built to be enjoyable for a wide range of golfers while keeping plenty of Seve's strategic interest. Its rarity value and easy reach from the capital make it a worthwhile pilgrimage for admirers of the man.

07

Westerwood, Scotland

Cumbernauld · Ballesteros with Dave Thomas

Seve's Scottish course, designed with Dave Thomas at Westerwood near Cumbernauld, on the doorstep of Glasgow and the central belt. A parkland and moorland hybrid set against the Campsie Fells, it is best known for the spectacular signature 15th, the Waterfall hole, played to a green cut into a rock face. A relaxed, scenic resort round and an easy addition to a wider Scottish itinerary.

Where they sit: Novo Sancti Petri on the Costa de la Luz and Los Arqueros on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain; Royal Obidos on Portugal's Silver Coast; The Heritage in the Irish midlands; Pont Royal in Provence; The Shire near London and Westerwood near Glasgow. Seve Ballesteros course questions

How many golf courses did Seve Ballesteros design?

Severiano Ballesteros designed comparatively few courses for a player of his stature, a few dozen rather than the hundreds attached to some tour names, spread mainly across Spain, Portugal, Ireland, France and the United Kingdom. He died in May 2011, and the courses that carry his name, such as Novo Sancti Petri, Pont Royal and The Heritage, are sought out by golfers who want to play a layout shaped by one of the game's great imaginations.

What is the best Seve Ballesteros golf course?

Real Novo Sancti Petri on Spain's Costa de la Luz is the most celebrated. It was Seve's first design in Europe, inaugurated in December 1990, and its pine-framed holes beside the Atlantic at Chiclana are widely regarded as his finest work. The Heritage in County Laois, Ireland and Pont Royal in Provence, France are the strongest of the rest.

Can visitors play Seve Ballesteros designed courses?

Yes. Most of the leading Seve designs are resort or pay-and-play courses that welcome visitors, including Novo Sancti Petri, The Heritage, Pont Royal, Royal Obidos and Los Arqueros, and many can be packaged with a hotel. The Shire London and Westerwood are also open to visitors. Always confirm current visitor policy and green fees directly before booking.
