The Best Golf on the Costa de la Luz

The Costa de la Luz is Andalusia's Atlantic coast, the quieter, wilder shore that runs from the sherry country around Jerez down past Cadiz and west into Huelva. The golf carries serious names: a Seve Ballesteros original at Novo Sancti Petri, a Jack Nicklaus tournament course at Montecastillo, a Jose Maria Olazabal design at Costa Ballena, all under big Atlantic light and far from the Costa del Sol crowds. Here are the eight we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each.

How we chose them

The Costa de la Luz is a different Andalusia from the Marbella coast: Atlantic rather than Mediterranean, breezier, greener and far less developed, with miles of open beach, the sherry towns of Jerez and Sanlucar, and the old ports of Cadiz and Huelva. Its golf splits into two clusters, the Cadiz province courses around Chiclana, Jerez and Rota, and the Huelva courses near the Portuguese border, and several were laid out by major champions. This list ranks the whole Atlantic coast, which is why it reads differently from our Costa del Sol and Andalusia lists.

Every fact here, from designers and hosting to access, was checked at the time of writing, and green fees along the coast are indicative for the 2026 season and generally kinder than the Marbella giants. Almost all of these courses welcome visitors and resort guests readily. The verdicts and the order are ours. If you want any of them built into a costed Costa de la Luz trip with the tee times handled, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Novo Sancti Petri

Severiano Ballesteros, 1990 · Chiclana de la Frontera · resort, visitors welcome

The coast's headline course and one of the largest golf complexes in Europe, the original Sea and Pine layout designed by Severiano Ballesteros in 1990 with further holes added since, to 54 holes in all. It threads between umbrella pines and the Atlantic dunes near Chiclana, with the sea in play and the breeze a constant companion, and it anchors a cluster of resort hotels that make it the natural base for a Cadiz golf week.

02

Montecastillo

Jack Nicklaus · Jerez de la Frontera · resort, visitors welcome

The province's tournament course, a Jack Nicklaus design beside the Jerez motor circuit that hosted the Volvo Masters, the European Tour's season finale, for five years from 1997. Big shouldered, beautifully conditioned and rolling through sherry country, it is the most muscular test on the Atlantic coast and an easy pairing with the bodegas of Jerez and the beaches an hour away.

03

Costa Ballena Ocean Golf

Jose Maria Olazabal · Rota · visitors welcome

Jose Maria Olazabal's 27 hole design near Rota, set just back from a fine stretch of Atlantic beach with wide fairways, large undulating greens and a separate par 3 course alongside. Generous and enjoyable rather than ferocious, it is one of the most popular visitor courses on the coast and a comfortable round for groups of mixed ability.

04

El Rompido

Alvaro Arana, North course 2006 · Cartaya, Huelva · resort, visitors welcome

The standout of the Huelva coast, two 18 hole courses set in the marshes near the mouth of the Rio Piedras, the North an Alvaro Arana design from 2006 that climbs to pine covered high ground with long views over the estuary, the South playing flatter and closer to the water. A polished resort with a strong stay and play offer near the Portuguese border.

05

Sherry Golf Jerez

Manuel Pinero · Jerez de la Frontera · visitors welcome

A Manuel Pinero design on the plain outside Jerez, a generous par 72 framed by palms and lakes that has matured into one of the most reliable rounds in sherry country. Sound conditioning, a relaxed welcome and easy access from Jerez make it a sensible companion to Montecastillo on a Cadiz province trip.

06

Islantilla

Canales and Recasens · Isla Cristina, Huelva · resort, visitors welcome

A 27 hole resort course near the Huelva beaches, designed by Enrique Canales and Luis Recasens as three interchangeable nines that wind through pine and rolling dunes down toward the Atlantic. Holiday golf at its most agreeable, with a beachfront hotel attached and enough variety across the three loops to fill several days.

07

Sancti Petri Hills

Manuel Pinero · Chiclana de la Frontera · visitors welcome

A second Manuel Pinero design near Chiclana, set slightly inland on rolling ground between the coast and the marshes, with generous landing areas and clever short game tests around the greens. A good value alternative to the bigger Novo Sancti Petri complex next door and a fine warm up or wind down round on a Cadiz trip.

08

Dehesa Montenmedio

Parkland near Vejer · Vejer de la Frontera · visitors welcome

A polished parkland course set in a private estate near the hill town of Vejer de la Frontera, known for its mature cork oaks, its art filled grounds and the equestrian and sculpture park that share the dehesa. Quieter and more manicured than the links style courses on the coast, it makes a calm, scenic round on the southern stretch of the Costa de la Luz.
