The Best Golf Courses in Kenya

Kenya plays golf at a mile high, on springy kikuyu fairways under the Ngong Hills and the great Rift escarpment, and the standard at the top is higher than most travellers expect. From the DP World Tour host in Nairobi to a coastal course among the baobabs near Mombasa, here are the six we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

Golf came to Kenya with the Uganda Railway and the early settlers, and the country now has a deeper roster of good courses than any of its East African neighbours. The game clusters in three places. Nairobi, sitting at around 5,500 feet, holds the historic championship clubs, where the altitude adds carry off the tee and the kikuyu grass gives a distinctive lie. The Rift Valley, an hour or two north west, offers resort golf above the lakes and beside wildlife conservancies. On the Indian Ocean coast north of Mombasa, a modern links inspired layout brings golf to the beach. The combination of serious courses, big game and warm coast is what makes Kenya a singular golf trip.

We weighed design quality, conditioning, setting and championship pedigree, and we favoured courses a visiting golfer can realistically arrange to play, most through a member introduction, a hotel or a tour operator. Every fact here, from opening years to host events and designers, was checked at the time of writing, and where the historical record is contested we have said so rather than guess. The verdicts are ours, and the order reflects our editors' view rather than any single published list. If you want any of these built into a costed trip, with a safari and the coast folded in, that is what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Muthaiga Golf Club

Founded 1913 · Nairobi

The home of Kenyan golf and the country's premier championship test, a mature parkland course in the leafy Muthaiga suburb of Nairobi that grew from a nine hole layout in 1913 to a full eighteen by the 1920s. It has long been the principal host of the Kenya Open, now the Magical Kenya Open on the DP World Tour, where it plays as a tight, tree lined par 71 of a little over 7,200 yards. The altitude, the kikuyu fairways and the small, well defended greens make it a thinking golfer's course and the benchmark every other club in the country is measured against.

02

Vipingo Ridge, Baobab Course

David Jones, 2009 · Kilifi coast, near Mombasa

The most spectacular setting in Kenyan golf, a par 72 of around 6,586 yards laid out in 2009 by the former Kenya Open winner David Jones on a ridge above the Indian Ocean, a short drive north of Mombasa. Named for the ancient baobab trees scattered across the property, it is widely cited as the only PGA accredited course in Africa, and the combination of sea breezes, coastal light and a smart, walkable routing makes it the natural centrepiece of a golf and beach trip. The estate has its own villas and lodge, so it works as a self contained base.

03

Karen Country Club

Founded 1937 · Nairobi, beneath the Ngong Hills

One of the most beautiful settings in Kenyan golf, laid out from 1937 on land that was once part of the coffee estate of the author Karen Blixen, with the Ngong Hills as a backdrop. A classic parkland course of broad, tree framed fairways and indigenous gardens, it is a relaxed, handsome members club close to the city and a fixture on the Nairobi golf circuit. The sense of history and the soft highland setting make it a favourite of visiting golfers looking for the colonial era atmosphere of the game in Kenya.

04

Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort

Opened 2000 · Naivasha, the Rift Valley

Resort golf with a view few courses on earth can match, opened in 2000 high on the Eburru escarpment above Lake Naivasha, roughly 6,580 yards of fairway tumbling across the slopes of the Great Rift Valley. The lodge sits within a wildlife conservancy, so zebra and gazelle are part of the round, and the elevation and undulation make for a genuinely testing, scenic day. As a base it pairs naturally with a Naivasha or Hell's Gate safari, and it is set up for travelling golfers staying on site.

05

Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club

Tom Macauley · Nairobi

A championship parkland course designed by Tom Macauley, threaded through forest and old coffee land on the northern edge of Nairobi, with the Windsor hotel on site in an Edwardian style. Generously bunkered, with mature trees and water in play, it sits at altitude like the rest of the Nairobi courses, which adds length to the tee shot. The hotel and golf in one place make it a comfortable, convenient base for a city stay, and it is one of the most accessible of the leading clubs for visiting golfers.

06

Royal Nairobi Golf Club

Among the oldest clubs in East Africa · Nairobi

One of the oldest golf clubs in East Africa, founded in the first decade of the twentieth century and later granted royal status, set on rolling parkland close to the centre of Nairobi. Compact, characterful and steeped in the history of the game in the region, it is a fine, walkable members course that rounds out a Nairobi itinerary. The convenient city location and the sense of heritage make it a worthwhile addition for golfers basing in the capital before heading to the Rift or the coast.

Plan a Nairobi golf trip

Opening years, designers and host events verified June 2026. The designer of record at the Great Rift Valley course is reported inconsistently across sources, so we have not attributed it here. The leading clubs welcome green fee visitors, usually with a member introduction or a hotel or tour arrangement. Course profiles are added across the site as the directory grows. Always confirm visitor access and fees directly before booking. Check tee time availability.

Kenya golf questions

What is the best golf course in Kenya?

Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi is our pick. The historic host of the Magical Kenya Open on the DP World Tour, it is the most complete championship test in the country. On the coast, the David Jones designed Baobab course at Vipingo Ridge is the most spectacular setting and a close rival.

Can you play golf and go on safari in Kenya?

Yes, and most visiting golfers do exactly that. Nairobi has a cluster of fine parkland courses within reach of the city, the Great Rift Valley resort sits beside Lake Naivasha and its wildlife conservancy, and Vipingo Ridge pairs golf with the beaches north of Mombasa. A week can comfortably mix rounds, a Maasai Mara or Rift Valley safari and time on the Indian Ocean coast.

When is the best time to play golf in Kenya?

The dry seasons from late June to October and January to March are the most reliable for golf, with warm days and firm fairways. The Nairobi courses sit at altitude, around a mile above sea level, so the air is mild and the ball flies further. The long rains from March to May are best avoided for a golf trip.

Are Kenyan golf courses open to visitors?

Yes. The leading clubs welcome green fee visitors, usually with a member introduction or through a hotel or tour arrangement, and the resort courses at Vipingo Ridge and the Great Rift Valley are set up for travelling golfers. Green fees are good value by international standards. Always confirm visitor access, handicap requirements and tee times directly before booking.
