Few destinations have built so much quality so fast. The central coast of Vietnam pairs a warm sea, long beaches and the old town of Hoi An with a roster of courses shaped by champion golfers turned designers, an unusual concentration of marquee names for one compact region. The best of them are genuinely world class, and even the resort courses are well kept and good value compared with the established golf capitals of Thailand or the Gulf.

Every fact here, from designers and opening years to awards, was checked at the time of writing against the clubs and recognized sources. The order is our editors' view rather than any single published list, so reasonable people will swap the top three. Most of these courses welcome visitor and resort play, and several offer floodlit or twilight golf to beat the heat. Hoiana Shores Golf Club

Robert Trent Jones Jr, 2019 · near Hoi An

The first Robert Trent Jones Jr design in Vietnam and, for our money, the finest round on this coast. Opened in 2019 on a wild, dune backed stretch of shoreline south of Danang toward Hoi An, it is the closest the region comes to a true seaside links, firm turf, sandy waste and the South China Sea down the right on a string of holes. It rewards shot making and a stiff upper lip in the wind, and it has quickly entered the conversation for the best course in the country.

Ba Na Hills Golf Club

Luke Donald, 2016 · the hills west of Danang

The first course designed by former world number one Luke Donald, set in the forested hills below the Ba Na resort and famous as the region's most decorated layout, named Asia's best course at the World Golf Awards for several years running. It is also the first fully floodlit championship course in the area, so a group can play in the cool of the evening. The routing climbs and falls through the trees with strategic, well bunkered holes, a polished and memorable round.

Laguna Golf Lang Co

Sir Nick Faldo · Lang Co, toward Hue

A Sir Nick Faldo design set on a dramatic strip of land between the Truong Son mountains and the East Sea, about an hour north of Danang on the way to Hue. Rice paddies, a meandering river and the mountain backdrop make it one of the most scenic rounds in Vietnam, and Faldo's routing uses the natural features rather than fighting them. Part of the Banyan Tree and Angsana resort complex, it pairs a fine course with five star lodging on the beach.

BRG Danang Golf Resort, Norman Course

Greg Norman, 2010 · Danang beach

The course that put Danang on the golf map, a Greg Norman design opened in 2010 on the sandy ground just back from the beach and originally known as the Dunes Course. It is an authentic links style layout of rolling fairways, native sand and exposed, windy holes, and it was named among the best new courses in the world when it opened. Mature, well conditioned and right beside the city, it remains a championship test and the anchor of the BRG resort.

Montgomerie Links Vietnam

Colin Montgomerie · between Danang and Hoi An

A par 72 of around 7,100 yards designed by Colin Montgomerie, eight time European Order of Merit winner, set on sandy soil midway between Danang and Hoi An and a short hop from the beach. The holes wind through casuarina trees and gentle dunes with generous fairways and well defended greens, a fair, enjoyable championship course with a strong clubhouse and villas on site. Convenient, polished and a comfortable round for a mixed group.

BRG Danang Golf Resort, Nicklaus Course

Jack Nicklaus, 2020 · Danang beach

The second course at BRG, completed in 2020 and the first Jack Nicklaus design in the region, a par 72 of around 7,000 yards that plays in a very different style from its Norman sibling. Much of it sits low on a floodplain among water, swamp and former paddy, so water comes into play often and the strategy is about position. Together the two courses give a group thirty six holes of championship golf without leaving the property, a fine contrast of dunes and water.

Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An

A modern resort course on the coast south of Hoi An, part of the Vinpearl leisure complex and a relaxed, scenic round to round out a trip. Wide fairways, water features and sea breezes make it an enjoyable rather than a brutal test, well suited to a group that wants comfortable golf paired with a beach resort and family friendly facilities. It is the easy going member of this list and a good fourth or fifth round on a longer Danang and Hoi An golf holiday.
