The Best Golf Courses in County Galway

County Galway holds a singular place in Irish golf: a brutal Atlantic links out on the Connemara coast, a championship resort course on the shore of Galway Bay, and a string of heathland and parkland tracks within minutes of one of Ireland's liveliest cities. Few counties pack such variety into so small a radius. Here are the six courses we rate most highly across the county, ranked.

How we chose them

We weighed the quality of the course against its setting and its place in a Galway trip. The county runs from the wild, exposed links of Connemara in the far west to the parkland and heathland courses around Galway city and the bay, so we have ranked the layouts that combine real design quality with a sense of place, and noted clearly which are a day trip from the city and which reward a night out on the coast. Galway makes a natural base, with most of this golf within half an hour.

Every designer, opening year and detail here was checked at the time of writing against club sources, and each course links to its full profile where we have one. The order and the verdicts are ours. The ranking

01

Connemara Golf Links

Eddie Hackett · Ballyconneely, near Clifden · par 72

Galway's finest course and one of Ireland's great hidden links, an Eddie Hackett design laid out on the wild Atlantic coast at Ballyconneely beside the Wild Atlantic Way. It is remote, exposed and exhilarating, with a punishing back nine that ranks among the toughest closing stretches in the country when the wind is up. The drive west through Connemara is part of the experience. For the serious golfer, this is the round to build a Galway trip around.

02

Galway Bay Golf Resort

Christy O'Connor Jr · Renville, Oranmore · par 72

A Christy O'Connor Jr championship course set on a peninsula jutting into Galway Bay, widely rated one of the most scenic resort courses in the west. Water is in play and in view across much of the round, with the Burren and the Clare hills across the bay. It pairs a genuine test with on site accommodation just outside the city, which makes it the easy, comfortable choice for a group that wants championship golf and a base in one place.

03

Galway Golf Club

Heritage club, founded 1895 · Salthill, Galway city · par 70

The city club, set on rising ground at Salthill with wonderful views over Galway Bay to the Burren. Dating to 1895 and shaped over the years with a Dr Alister MacKenzie connection in its history, it is a charming heathland and parkland test, walkable and welcoming, right on the edge of the city. The pick for a relaxed round within a few minutes of the pubs and restaurants of Galway.

04

Glenlo Abbey Golf Course

Parkland estate course · Bushypark, by the River Corrib · par 36 for nine

A pretty parkland nine on the Glenlo Abbey estate beside the River Corrib and Lough Corrib, attached to a five star country house hotel just outside the city. The famous fourth runs along the water, and the course is immaculately kept and gentle enough to enjoy at a relaxed pace. The choice for a luxurious stay and a civilized round, or a quick nine to pair with a city break.

05

Oughterard Golf Club

Mature parkland · Oughterard, gateway to Connemara · par 70

A welcoming parkland course about half an hour west of Galway on the road to Connemara, with generous, lush fairways framed by mature trees and woodland. It is well kept, fair and good value, and makes an ideal warm up round on the way out to Connemara or a softer alternative to the links for a mixed group. A friendly, scenic club at the gateway to the wild west.

06

Bearna Golf Club

Heathland and moorland · Bearna, west of Galway city · par 72

A spacious heathland and moorland course in the hills just west of the city near Bearna, with water, granite and big open views back toward Galway Bay. It plays longer and wilder than the parkland clubs, a taste of the rugged terrain that defines this coast without the drive all the way to Connemara. A good value, characterful round to round out a trip based in the city.

Golf in County Galway: questions

What is the best golf course in County Galway?

Connemara Golf Links near Clifden, an Eddie Hackett links on the Wild Atlantic Way, is widely regarded as Galway's finest course and our top pick. Galway Bay Golf Resort, a Christy O'Connor Jr championship par 72 on the shore of Galway Bay, is the next call, with the heritage Galway Golf Club in Salthill close behind.

Where can I play links golf in County Galway?

Connemara Golf Links at Ballyconneely is the true links of the county, an exposed, dramatic Eddie Hackett layout on the far Atlantic coast. Galway Bay Golf Resort plays as a links style course right on the water, and Galway Golf Club in Salthill has a heathland and parkland character with sweeping views over the bay to the Burren.

How far is Connemara from Galway city?

Connemara Golf Links at Ballyconneely is about an hour and a half drive west of Galway city through the Connemara landscape, with Clifden the nearest town. Galway Bay, Galway Golf Club, Glenlo Abbey and Bearna are all within twenty minutes of the city, while Oughterard sits about half an hour out on the road to Connemara, so most of the county's golf is an easy day trip from a city base.

When is the best time to play golf in County Galway?

May to September gives the warmest, driest weather and the long Atlantic evenings, with June and July the sunniest. The far west coast is exposed, so wind and showers are possible in any month, and the links plays firmest in late summer and early autumn. Spring and autumn are quieter and better value; always check conditions and book ahead in summer.
