Yorkshire Golf Holidays: Where to Stay and Play
England's biggest county holds the game's best kept inland secret: Alister MacKenzie's home turf. The architect of Augusta National learned his craft on the Leeds heathland, Ganton has hosted a Ryder Cup and stages championship golf to this day, and the green fees undercut the famous coastlines by half. Here is how to build the trip, what the 2026 fees total, and where to base each leg.

Who this trip suits
Golf architecture people, and anyone tired of paying Open rota prices for great turf. Yorkshire is where the case for inland English golf is strongest: Alwoodley, the 1907 course where Alister MacKenzie first put shovel to heath, and Moortown, host of the first Ryder Cup on British soil in 1929, share a boundary in north Leeds. Lindrick, on the county's southern edge, staged the 1957 Ryder Cup that Great Britain and Ireland famously won. And Ganton, an hour east toward Scarborough, is the great anomaly, an inland course on pure sand that plays like a links and hosted the 1949 Ryder Cup. Four Ryder Cup and championship venues, none of them requiring a ballot, all of them welcoming visitors midweek.
The courses to build it around
The heathland spine comes first: Alwoodley and Moortown back to back from a Harrogate or Leeds base, with Pannal or Fulford the supporting round. Then the set piece day, or better an overnight, at Ganton, whose pace and bunkering reward fresh legs. Lindrick slots naturally onto the first or last day if you arrive up the M1 from the south. Our ranked verdicts on all of them sit in the best golf courses in Yorkshire list.

When to go and when to book
April to October is the season, with May, June and September the sweet spot: the heath drains fast, the turf runs firm, and the long northern evenings make Ganton's 4pm twilight rate, roughly £120 against the standard £235, the best value tee time in English championship golf. Ganton is notable for another reason: it held its visitor fees steady into 2026 while the famous coastal names rose sharply, so the gap keeps widening in Yorkshire's favor.
Booking is refreshingly direct. All four anchors take visitor bookings through the club office or online tee sheets, midweek is far easier than weekends, and a handicap certificate is expected at Ganton. Six to eight weeks of lead time covers most of the year; give the prime May, June and September Fridays three months. No ballots, no two night minimums, no package gatekeeping.
Where to stay
Harrogate is the golf base of choice for the heathland leg, a spa town with the county's best food and a half hour radius that covers Alwoodley, Moortown and Pannal. For the Ganton leg, Scarborough's seafront hotels or an inn in the Wolds turn the trek into the trip's highlight, and York, an hour from almost everything, suits a group that wants one base and city evenings. Book the Ganton tee time first, then shape the beds around it. Browse partner stays.

Yorkshire trip questions
How much does a Yorkshire golf holiday cost?
Remarkably little for the quality. At indicative 2026 rates, Ganton is around £235 with a twilight rate of roughly £120, Moortown runs around £150 to £175, Alwoodley around £130 and Lindrick from about £85 in winter to roughly £125 to £145 in summer. Four headline rounds total around £650 to £700 per person, half what the same caliber costs on the Open rota coastlines. Always confirm directly before booking.
Which courses should the trip be built around?
Four anchors: Ganton, the heathland links near Scarborough that hosted the 1949 Ryder Cup; Alwoodley, MacKenzie's first design; Moortown, host of the first Ryder Cup on British soil in 1929; and Lindrick, scene of the famous 1957 Ryder Cup win. Alwoodley and Moortown adjoin in north Leeds, Lindrick sits south near Sheffield, and Ganton is an hour east toward the coast.
Where should the trip be based?
Harrogate or north Leeds for the heathland spine, with Alwoodley, Moortown and Pannal inside half an hour. Give Ganton a long day or, better, a night in Scarborough or the Wolds, and play Lindrick on the way in or out if arriving from the south. York works as a single base if you accept an hour's drive each way.
When is the best time to go?
April to October, with May, June and September the sweet spot for daylight and firm turf. Ganton's twilight rate from 4pm makes summer evenings the value play of the trip. Midweek is markedly easier than weekends at all four clubs, and a handicap certificate is expected at Ganton.
