Who this trip suits

The Veneto is the thinking golfer's Italian trip, golf as the frame around one of the richest cultural corners of Europe. The courses are handsome parkland layouts threaded through old estates and 19th century parks rather than dramatic seaside links, and the real luxury is what surrounds them: Venice and its lagoon, the frescoed villas of Palladio, the Prosecco hills of Conegliano and the food and wine of Treviso. It suits couples and groups who want civilized morning golf and unforgettable afternoons.

Everything sits within an hour of everything else, so base once near Treviso or Venice and reach the lot. Build the trip around Golf Club Villa Condulmer, the grande dame of the area in a Palladian style park, add the 27 holes of Golf della Montecchia near Padua and the rolling Asolo course beneath its medieval hill town, and you have three contrasting rounds with the Grand Canal never far away.

Best time to book

The Veneto plays best in spring and autumn, April to June and September to October, when the weather is warm and settled, the courses are at their finest and the cities are at their most enjoyable. High summer is hot and humid on the plain, while mild winters still allow playable golf between cold snaps. Book the leading clubs a couple of weeks ahead in high season, and avoid the worst of the Venice tourist crush by visiting the city early or late in the day.
