Texas Hill Country Golf Packages and Breaks: Where to Stay and Play

Between Austin and San Antonio, the Hill Country folds limestone canyons, spring fed lakes and live oak ranch land into the best resort golf in Texas: three Robert Trent Jones Sr courses on one lakeside property at Horseshoe Bay, two Tom Fazio designs at Barton Creek, and a PGA Tour venue you can play by checking into the right hotel. Here is how the packages work, what they cost in 2026, and how we would build the week.

Who this trip suits

This is the buddies trip and the couples trip in one. Groups get 54 holes on a single property at Horseshoe Bay with replays for $50 and nobody driving more than five minutes to a first tee; couples get Austin's restaurants, Fredericksburg's wineries and the river towns between rounds. It also suits golfers who want a tour venue without a tournament badge: guests of the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort can book TPC San Antonio's Oaks course, where the PGA Tour plays the Valero Texas Open. If your picture of Texas golf is flat and brown, the Hill Country, with its elevation change and oak shaded creeks, is the correction.

The courses to build around

Horseshoe Bay Resort, Lake LBJ

The anchor of any Hill Country package. Three Robert Trent Jones Sr courses sit on one resort above Lake LBJ: Slick Rock, the most playable, with its famous waterfall hole; Ram Rock, long rated among the hardest courses in Texas; and Apple Rock, the scenic lakeview favorite. Stay and play packages bundle a round per person per night, an arrival day round after 1pm runs about $80, and replays about $50, which is how a three night stay becomes 72 holes without leaving the property.

Omni Barton Creek, Austin

The luxury end of the trip. The resort's Fazio Foothills course, with its canyon carries and cave bunkered 18th, is the most celebrated resort round in Austin at an indicative $275 peak in 2026, and the Fazio Canyons course alongside gives the property a genuine 36 hole day. Resort guests get priority access, the spa and pools are the best in Texas golf, and downtown Austin is twenty minutes away.

TPC San Antonio and the San Antonio resorts

The Oaks course at TPC San Antonio, host of the Valero Texas Open, is reserved for members and guests of the adjoining JW Marriott resort, which makes the hotel booking the tee time. Across town, the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort's own Hill Country Golf Club spreads 27 holes through oak motts and ranch land at roughly $95 to $170 by season, and the La Cantera resort courses above the city round out a deep San Antonio bench.

When to book, and when to go

Spring is the Hill Country at full strength: March to May brings warm days, the bluebonnet bloom and the Valero Texas Open buzz, and it is also when rates peak and tee sheets fill, so book resort packages two to three months out. October and November are the insider's window, the same golf in golden light with summer pricing gone. High summer is the bargain, regularly past 100 degrees but workable at dawn and twilight, and winter stays mild enough that the courses never really close. Whichever window you pick, fly into Austin or San Antonio, rent a car and let the ranch road drives stitch the trip together.

Traveling from the UK or Europe? Our Hill Country golf holidays page frames the same trip from abroad, and the statewide picture lives at golf in Texas.

Hill Country package questions

What does a Texas Hill Country golf package cost?

As of 2026, resort rounds in the Hill Country run from about $80 for an arrival day round at Horseshoe Bay after 1pm to roughly $275 at Barton Creek's Fazio Foothills, with most resort golf falling in between by course and season. Stay and play packages at Horseshoe Bay bundle a round per night, with $50 replays, and room rates at the big resorts typically start around $300 a night. All figures are third party rates, so always confirm directly before booking.

Which Hill Country resort is best for a golf package?

Horseshoe Bay Resort on Lake LBJ is the purest golf package destination, with three Robert Trent Jones Sr courses, Slick Rock, Ram Rock and Apple Rock, and stay and play deals that bundle a round per night. Omni Barton Creek in Austin is the luxury pick with its two Tom Fazio courses, and the JW Marriott San Antonio is the route onto TPC San Antonio's Oaks course, home of the Valero Texas Open.

When is the best time for Hill Country golf?

March to May and October to November are the sweet spots: warm days, cool evenings and, in spring, the famous bluebonnet wildflower bloom, which is also peak pricing. High summer regularly tops 100 degrees, so summer packages are cheap but tee times belong at dawn or twilight. Winter golf is genuinely playable, with mild sunny spells and the lowest rates of the year.

Do you need a car for a Hill Country golf trip?

Yes. Fly into Austin or San Antonio, both under an hour from the heart of the Hill Country, and rent a car. Horseshoe Bay is about an hour northwest of Austin, Fredericksburg and the wine country sit between the two cities, and the drives themselves, through ranch land and river valleys, are part of the trip. A single base works for a long weekend; a two stop trip pairs Austin with the Highland Lakes or San Antonio.
