Everything is bigger in Texas, and the golf is no exception: PGA Tour stages, Pete Dye and Tom Fazio designs and lake side resorts spread across the Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin. Here is where to stay and play, the courses to build around and what a Texas golf break costs in 2026.

Who this trip suits

A Texas golf break suits the group that wants serious resort golf without crossing an ocean, paired with warm weather, big hospitality and the food, music and ranch country that make the Lone Star State its own world. The golf is genuinely good: a PGA Tour venue, multiple Tom Fazio designs, a Pete Dye course and a clutch of Robert Trent Jones Sr layouts, most of them attached to resorts that bundle rooms, rounds and access into a clean package. It works for a buddies trip, a corporate outing or a couple who want golf folded into a wider Hill Country and city escape.

The geography is simple. The Texas Hill Country, the rolling limestone country between San Antonio and Austin, holds the densest cluster of package golf, anchored by TPC San Antonio and Omni Barton Creek, with Horseshoe Bay on Lake LBJ a scenic detour. Add the cities at either end, the barbecue, the live music of Austin and the River Walk of San Antonio, and you have a trip that travels well for golfers and non golfers alike.

The courses to build around

The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, host of the Valero Texas Open

TPC San Antonio, the Oaks

Greg Norman with Sergio Garcia · Valero Texas Open host

The headline round, a Greg Norman design shaped with Sergio Garcia and home of the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open. Accessible to the public through stay and play packages at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country resort, where the Pete Dye designed Canyons course gives you a contrasting second round, a massive spa and a lazy river through the property.

Omni Barton Creek, the Fazio courses

Tom Fazio · four courses · near Austin

The best resort golf around Austin, led by the Fazio Canyons and Fazio Foothills, two Tom Fazio designs of cascading creeks, cliffs and dramatic elevation changes. Four courses in total make Barton Creek a one stop base, minutes from the live music, barbecue and lakes of Austin, and a natural pairing with the San Antonio resorts an hour or so south.

Horseshoe Bay Resort

Robert Trent Jones Sr · Ram Rock, Slick Rock, Apple Rock

A lakeside resort on Lake LBJ with three Robert Trent Jones Sr courses, the famously tough Ram Rock among the hardest in the state, the scenic Apple Rock along the water and the resort friendly Slick Rock. A scenic Hill Country detour that pairs golf with the lakes, and a strong third base for a longer Texas trip.

La Cantera, the Resort Course

Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf · San Antonio

Built into a former quarry on the edge of San Antonio, the Resort Course at La Cantera tumbles over dramatic elevation changes with views across the Hill Country, a long time Tour venue and an easy, scenic add to a San Antonio leg. A resort base close to the city, SeaWorld and Six Flags for groups travelling with family.

Whispering Pines

Private · rated the best course in Texas

The aspirational round. Whispering Pines in Trinity is consistently rated the best course in the state, a tight, tree lined Chip Powell design along Caney Creek and Lake Livingston with superb green complexes. It is a private club, so access needs a member host, but it is the one to chase if your group has a connection to make it happen.

Designers, host history and access verified June 2026. Green fees and package ranges are indicative third party figures for the 2026 season and change with demand and season. Always confirm directly before booking. Check tee time availability.

Best time to book

Texas plays best in spring and fall, roughly March to May and September to November, when the Hill Country is warm and comfortable and the courses are in peak condition. The Valero Texas Open lands at TPC San Antonio in the spring, a fine time to play in the morning and watch the Tour in the afternoon. Summers are hot, so book early tee times from June to August, while winters are mild and playable but cooler, and often the best value. Book the marquee resort rounds and rooms ahead for the spring and fall peaks, when the Hill Country resorts fill fastest.
