New York rewards the golfer who values substance over polish. The state's headline act, Bethpage Black, is a brutally good A.W. Tillinghast design from 1936 that hosted the 2025 Ryder Cup, and it remains a public state park course with a green fee around what a Scottsdale resort charges for a cart. Around it sit four more Bethpage courses, the Robert Trent Jones designed Montauk Downs at the end of Long Island, and upstate, the Turning Stone resort and Cooperstown's Leatherstocking.
This is a trip for buddies groups who want championship golf, real value and something to talk about: city nights if you want them, Hamptons beaches, the Baseball Hall of Fame. A five night structure that works
Fly into JFK or LaGuardia. Nights one and two on Long Island: a warm up round on Bethpage Red, then the Black the next morning, booked through the state reservation system or, for the committed, the overnight queue in the parking lot. Night three out east, Montauk Downs in the afternoon and a fish dinner by the harbor. Then drive or fly upstate for nights four and five: Turning Stone's Atunyote and a casino hotel, and on the way home, Leatherstocking and an afternoon at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Costed honestly, the golf is the cheap part.
