Who this trip suits

Egypt is the value play for winter sun golf, and it suits groups who want warm fairways, big name designs and a genuine sense of place without the prices of the Gulf. The Red Sea coast pairs championship golf with some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world, so it works beautifully for mixed groups where not everyone plays every day. Cairo, meanwhile, lets a keen golf group combine two strong inland courses with the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the buzz of one of the world's great cities. It is a long established golf destination that has quietly built a serious portfolio of courses.

If you want pure beach and golf, base on the Red Sea around Hurghada and split your rounds between Soma Bay and El Gouna. If you want golf with history and culture, base in Cairo for Madinaty and Allegria and add the pyramids. The most memorable Egypt trips do a little of both, flying the short hop between the coast and the capital.

The courses to build around

The Cascades championship course at Soma Bay on the Red Sea, Egypt

Cascades at Soma Bay

Gary Player · Par 72 · Indicative 2026 green fee from €70

The first championship course on the western Red Sea and still Egypt's marquee round, a Gary Player design set on a headland with the sea on one side and the desert mountains on the other. Dramatic elevation and sea views make it the standout of any Red Sea trip, with a Player nine hole short course alongside.

Madinaty Golf Club

Robert Trent Jones Jr., 2020 · Par 71 · Best in Africa winner

Cairo's modern championship course, a long Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that has been named the best course in Egypt and in Africa at the World Golf Awards. Managed by Troon, it stretches past 7,400 yards from the tips, with a photogenic par 3 seventeenth played over water to a tiered green.

Steigenberger El Gouna golf course on the Red Sea, Egypt

El Gouna, Steigenberger

Gene Bates with Fred Couples · Par 72 · Red Sea resort

The original El Gouna course, designed by Gene Bates in collaboration with major champion Fred Couples, winds through lagoons and islands in the resort town north of Hurghada. Water is in play on most holes, and the lively El Gouna marina and beach scene make it an easy group base.

Ancient Sands Golf Resort with desert dunes near El Gouna, Egypt

Ancient Sands, El Gouna

Karl Litten · Par 72 · Desert dunes

El Gouna's second course, a Karl Litten design with bold elevation changes, sweeping desert dunes and views toward the Red Sea. A firmer, more rugged contrast to its lagoon sister course, it gives a two course base in El Gouna real variety over a week.

The Allegria Greg Norman parkland course on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt

The Allegria, Cairo

Greg Norman, 2010 · Par 72 · Greg Norman's first in North Africa

Greg Norman's first North African design, a manicured parkland layout on the western outskirts of Cairo that opened to strong reviews in 2010. Rolling fairways and well shaped greens make it a stylish counterpoint to Madinaty for a two course Cairo trip near the pyramids.

Best time to book

The golf season runs October to April, with warm, dry days and comfortable temperatures on the Red Sea and in Cairo. Midsummer is very hot, especially inland, so most groups travel in the cooler half of the year. The Red Sea stays playable longer at each end of the season. Book peak winter weeks two to three months ahead, and earlier for the Christmas, New Year and Easter peaks.
