Best Time to Play Golf in Switzerland, 2026

Switzerland runs from lakeside courses near Geneva and Zurich to genuine high mountain layouts at Andermatt and Crans Montana, with the mild Ticino lakes in the south. The alpine season is short and glorious. Here is when to go in 2026.

A short, spectacular mountain season

Switzerland's golf calendar is shaped by altitude. The headline alpine courses sit high in the mountains and open only once the snow has cleared, so most run from roughly May to October, with the peak from June to September when conditions are immaculate and the air is mild and settled. The lower courses near the cities and lakes, around Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich, often open earlier in March and stay playable into November. In the south, the Ticino courses around Lago Maggiore enjoy a mild Mediterranean climate and play through much of the year.

For most travellers the heart of summer is the time to go, when every mountain course is open, the fairways are at their greenest and the long days allow unhurried golf in clear alpine light. May and October are excellent shoulder weeks with good conditions, thinner crowds and lower prices, and the southern lakes stretch the season at both ends. Winter belongs to the ski slopes, with the high courses under snow.

Spring, April to May

An unfolding season. The lowland and lakeside courses wake first, drying out and greening through April, while the high mountain layouts stay closed until the snow finally clears, often not until late May. It is a fine value window for the lower courses, with mild days and quiet fairways, though the marquee alpine names may not yet be open.

Summer, June to August

The prime time. Every course is open, the mountain conditions are immaculate and the days are long and mild, ideal for the high layouts where the thin air carries the ball further. It is peak season and the busiest, but for the full Swiss experience, from Crans Montana to Andermatt, this is the window to aim for.

Autumn, September to October

Summer's quieter equal and a favourite for many. September holds warm, settled days with the mountain courses still in top form and the crowds easing after the holidays. October brings cooler air and golden larch colour in the high valleys before the season closes, with value improving as it goes.

Winter, November to March

Mostly off the table. The alpine and lowland courses close as the snow arrives and the country turns to skiing. The exception is the south, where the Ticino courses by Lago Maggiore, such as Ascona and Losone, stay mild and open through much of the cold season for golfers chasing winter sun close to the mountains.

Our take

For the best of Switzerland, build the trip around high summer, June into September, when every alpine course is open and in immaculate condition and the long mild days suit the mountain layouts where the thin air rewards a high ball. September is our quiet favourite, pairing top condition with easing crowds. If you want a spring or late autumn break, point it at the lower lakeside courses or south to the mild Ticino lakes, which play when the high country is shut. Use our month by month travel calendar to fine tune the week, and lean on the Switzerland destination guide and our best courses list to choose where to play, from the cliffside drama of Crans sur Sierre to the new Andermatt Swiss Alps course.
