The Best Golf Courses in Switzerland

Swiss golf runs from the shores of Lake Geneva to the high Alps, from Pete Dye's manicured championship land to a tournament course at 1,500 metres. Here are the ten we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

Switzerland is a small but exceptional golf country, and its best courses fall into two worlds. Around Lake Geneva, in the cantons of Vaud and Geneva, sits a cluster of polished, exclusive championship courses on relatively gentle ground, led by Pete Dye's Domaine Imperial and the very private Geneva club at Cologny. High in the mountains is the other Switzerland, where the golf is defined by altitude and scenery, none more famous than the tournament course above Crans Montana that has hosted the Omega European Masters for decades. We weighed design quality, conditioning, setting and tournament pedigree, and we recognise that in Switzerland the scenery is part of the architecture.

Every fact here, from designers and host events to altitude, was checked at the time of writing. Many of the finest Swiss clubs are private and selective, with long waiting lists and limited visitor access, so we say so where it matters, and a guest introduction or a resort package is often the route in. The verdicts are ours, and the order reflects our editors' view rather than any single published list, so reasonable people will reorder the top five. If you want any of these built into a costed Alpine trip, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Golf Club Domaine Imperial

Pete Dye, 1987 · Gland · Lake Geneva

Widely rated the finest course in Switzerland, Domaine Imperial is the only Pete Dye design in the country, laid out on a former imperial estate on the shore of Lake Geneva between Geneva and Lausanne. Dye built it with environmental sensitivity and his trademark strategic edge, and it has long ranked among the best in continental Europe. A selective private club in a beautiful lakeside setting, the round every visiting golfer hopes to arrange in the Lake Geneva region.

02

Golf Club de Geneve

Robert Trent Jones Sr, 1973 · Cologny

The most exclusive and confidential golf in Switzerland, founded in 1922 on the heights of Cologny above the city and given its modern championship form by Robert Trent Jones Sr in 1973. Mature, tree lined and impeccably conditioned, it is a members club with a famously long waiting list and very limited visitor access, which only adds to its reputation. A connoisseur's course and one of the great private clubs of the Alpine region.

03

Crans-sur-Sierre, Severiano Ballesteros Course

Crans-Montana · 1,500 m · Omega European Masters

Perhaps the most spectacularly scenic tournament venue in the world, the Severiano Ballesteros Course sits on a high Alpine plateau above Crans Montana at around 1,500 metres, ringed by snow capped peaks. Ballesteros redesigned the historic layout, which has hosted the Omega European Masters on the European Tour for decades, and the thin mountain air sends the ball soaring. Open to visitors in season, it is the bucket list round of any Swiss golf trip.

Set on high ground above Lausanne at Le Chalet a Gobet, with sweeping views over Lake Geneva and the Alps, the Lausanne club dates to 1921 and is one of the most historic and respected in the country. A mature, tree framed parkland of real quality and championship length, it has hosted national and European events and remains a benchmark of the Lake Geneva region's golf. A private club that welcomes visitors by arrangement.

06

Andermatt Swiss Alps

Kurt Rossknecht, 2016 · Urseren valley

The newest of the great Swiss courses, an 18 hole Kurt Rossknecht design opened in 2016 on the floor of the Urseren valley at Andermatt, framed on every side by Alpine peaks. Named Switzerland's best course in its early years, it threads the Reuss river and natural terrain into a modern, walkable championship layout, and it anchors a fast growing four season resort. One of the most scenic and contemporary rounds in the Alps, open to visitors.

08

Engadine Golf Club, Samedan

Founded 1893 · high Alps · near St Moritz

The oldest golf club in Switzerland, founded in 1893 on the high valley floor of the Engadine near St Moritz, one of the highest courses in Europe. The open, flat terrain laced with mountain streams sits beneath the Livigno Alps, and the thin air and glittering light make it a unique high altitude round. Home to the oldest amateur tournament in the country, it pairs golf with the famous Engadine resorts and lakes.

09

Golf Club Interlaken-Unterseen

Bernese Oberland · beneath the Eiger

A classic Alpine parkland course on the valley floor between Interlaken's two lakes, with the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau filling the skyline, one of the most photogenic settings in Swiss golf. Welcoming to visitors and easily combined with the region's railways and peaks.

Golf and Country Club Les Bois

Franches-Montagnes · the Jura

A highland course on the rolling plateau of the Franches-Montagnes in the Jura, among the pastures, drystone walls and free roaming horses that define this quiet corner of French speaking Switzerland. Long, exposed and a genuine test in the wind, it is one of the best courses in the Jura and a complete change of character from the lakeside and high Alpine golf, for those who want to see a different and uncrowded Switzerland.

Switzerland golf questions

What is the best golf course in Switzerland?

Golf Club Domaine Imperial, the only Pete Dye design in the country, on the shore of Lake Geneva at Gland, is our pick and is widely rated the finest in Switzerland. The very private Geneva club at Cologny and the famous Omega European Masters course above Crans Montana complete the top three. Reasonable people reorder the top five, but those anchor any serious list.

When is the best time to play golf in Switzerland?

The Alpine season is short, roughly May to October. The high mountain courses such as Crans Montana, the Engadine and Andermatt open late and close early, with summer the only reliable window, while the lakeside courses around Geneva and Lausanne enjoy a slightly longer season. The Omega European Masters is played at Crans at the end of the summer, a fine time to combine watching and playing.

Can you play the private Swiss clubs as a visitor?

It varies. Crans Montana, Bad Ragaz, Andermatt and Interlaken welcome visitors in season, while the most selective clubs, especially Geneva at Cologny and to a degree Domaine Imperial and Lausanne, have limited visitor access and may require a member introduction or a handicap certificate. A resort package or a guest introduction is often the route in. Always confirm access directly before booking.

Where is the best golf in Switzerland?

Two regions stand out: the shores of Lake Geneva in the cantons of Vaud and Geneva, home to Domaine Imperial, Geneva, Lausanne and Bonmont, and the high Alps, where Crans Montana, Andermatt, the Engadine and Interlaken offer scenery few places on earth can match. A classic trip pairs a few lakeside rounds with the drama of one or two mountain courses.
