4 Day Ayrshire and Troon Golf Itinerary
Four rounds of world class Ayrshire links from one base, with almost no driving: Western Gailes, Prestwick, the Open stage at Royal Troon and the cliffs of Turnberry, all on one stretch of the west coast, forty five minutes from Glasgow airport and walkable from a Troon hotel.

Who this trip suits
This is the four day version of the great west coast links run, for a group that wants the full set without a long tour: Western Gailes and Prestwick to warm up the eye, the Open stage at Royal Troon, and Turnberry's Ailsa along the cliffs to finish. The four courses sit on one stretch of Ayrshire coast, so a Troon base serves the whole trip with short morning drives and no repacking.
It suits a buddies group or a couple of pairs with a midweek window and serious ambition. If you have less time, our 3 day Ayrshire itinerary trims it to three rounds; if you want the wider country, the 10 day Scotland grand tour strings the west together with Fife and the Highlands.
The 4 day plan
Western Gailes Golf Club
Open on the connoisseur's links, a narrow ribbon of duneland between the railway and the sea since 1897. Western Gailes runs out along the shore and back through the dunes with firm turf, burns in awkward places and subtle greens that teach you west coast pace on day one. Lunch in the old clubhouse is part of the experience. About fifteen minutes north of Troon, indicative 2026 peak fee around 335 pounds. See our Western Gailes profile.
Prestwick Golf Club
The history round. Prestwick hosted the first Open Championship in 1860 and the golf remains gloriously old school: the Cardinal bunker, the blind Himalayas par 3, sleepered hazards and humps the modern game forgot. Visitors play on weekdays, with Thursday mornings only, and the club asks handicaps of 24 for men and 28 for women. Indicative 2026 fees run around 380 pounds in peak with midweek rates from about 170. Our Prestwick profile has the detail.
Royal Troon, Old Course
The Open stage. The Old Course at Royal Troon, host of the 2024 Open, gives you the Postage Stamp, the most famous short par 3 in golf, and a back nine into the wind that decides championships. Visitors are welcomed mid April to October, chiefly Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, with handicap limits of 20 for men and 30 for women. The 2026 midweek guide is about 250 pounds for the Old Course, or 495 for the day ticket that adds the Portland. Plan this day first; see our Royal Troon profile.
Turnberry, Ailsa Course
Finish on the most scenic links in Scotland. The Ailsa runs along the cliffs past the lighthouse and faces Ailsa Craig out in the firth, a multiple Open host reworked into one of the great clifftop nines. Premium green fees, lower off season, and a round to end the trip on a high. About an hour south of Troon, an easy final day before the drive back to Glasgow. See our Turnberry Ailsa profile.

When to go and where to stay
May to September is the window, with long daylight, firm turf and every clubhouse in full swing; April and October trade some weather for friendlier rates. Base in Troon itself, where hotels and guest houses sit walking distance from the Old Course, and reserve a car for the Turnberry day to the south. Book the Royal Troon visitor day first, then Prestwick, then slot Western Gailes and Turnberry around it, and reserve dinner ahead on summer weekends.

Ayrshire and Troon itinerary questions
Can you play Western Gailes, Prestwick, Royal Troon and Turnberry in four days?
Yes. Western Gailes, Prestwick and Royal Troon sit within about fifteen minutes of each other on the central Ayrshire coast, and Turnberry is around an hour south, so one Troon base serves the whole trip with short drives and a single longer run for the finale.
What does the four day Ayrshire trip cost in green fees?
Indicatively for 2026: Western Gailes around 335 pounds peak, Prestwick around 380 pounds peak with midweek from about 170, Royal Troon's Old Course from about 250 pounds midweek or 495 for the day ticket, and Turnberry's Ailsa at premium rates that fall off season. Always confirm directly before booking.
When should you play this itinerary?
May to September for long daylight and firm links turf. Royal Troon welcomes visitors from mid April to October, chiefly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, so build the trip around the Troon day first.
Do these clubs have handicap limits?
Yes for some. Royal Troon's Old Course asks for handicaps of 20 or better for men and 30 for women, and Prestwick asks for 24 and 28. Carry a handicap certificate or app record for all four rounds.
