Wentworth Dress Code and Etiquette

Wentworth is one of England's grandest clubs and dresses the part. On the course the rule is a collared shirt, tailored trousers or shorts and golf shoes, with no blue denim or collarless tops, and the clubhouse runs to smart casual with day shoes. Here is exactly what to wear, what is banned, and the etiquette of the home of the BMW PGA Championship.

The short answer

Wentworth's on course standard is smart golf attire and nothing less. That means a collared shirt, tailored trousers or tailored shorts worn with appropriate socks, and golf shoes, the outfit any visitor to a top heathland club would expect. Blue denim, sleeveless shirts and collarless tee shirts are not permitted on the courses, so a smart golf polo is the simple safe choice. Meet that and you are welcome on the West, the East and the Edinburgh.

The clubhouse adds a second layer to plan for. Dress there is smart casual, some dining areas ask gentlemen for a jacket, and day shoes must be worn inside, with golf shoes confined to the bag drop, locker room and pro shop. Staff and course rangers are authorized to approach anyone not meeting the standard, so this is a club that quietly enforces its rules. Everything below was checked in June 2026 against Wentworth Club information and is indicative, so always confirm the current dress code and access rules directly with the club before you travel.

What to wear, and what to leave at home

The safe Wentworth outfit is a golf polo, tailored trousers and a light layer for the breeze that moves through the Surrey pines, with a waterproof in the bag because English heathland weather turns quickly. In summer tailored shorts with appropriate socks are entirely correct. The one extra to pack that visitors forget is a pair of day shoes and, if you plan to dine, a jacket, because the clubhouse will not seat you in golf shoes and certain rooms expect the jacket for gentlemen.

What gets a visitor a quiet word is the usual short list: blue jeans, a sleeveless or collarless top, or golf shoes worn into the clubhouse. Leave the denim behind, wear a collared shirt, and change your shoes before going inside. The professional shop stocks course appropriate apparel if you are caught out, but it is simpler to arrive dressed correctly and carry day shoes for after the round.

Etiquette on the West Course

The West Course is a Harry Colt heathland design from 1926, remodeled by Ernie Els and stretching to a par 72 of around 7,300 yards, and it is the stage for the DP World Tour's BMW PGA Championship. Playing a championship course in the public eye carries a championship's expectation of pace and care, and the famous closing par 5 eighteenth, with its long approach to a green ringed by spectators every September, is a hole worth saving energy for. A caddie or a forecaddie, arranged in advance, is the smart way to handle the lines through the trees.

Pace of play

Keep up with the group ahead rather than simply ahead of the group behind, be ready to play when it is your turn, and limit a ball search in the heather so the tee sheet keeps moving.

Care for the course

Repair pitch marks on the greens, replace divots or use the sand provided, rake bunkers thoroughly, and keep trolleys and any buggies on the paths and away from greens and tees.

Clubhouse and phones

Change into day shoes for the clubhouse, keep phones on silent on the course, and follow staff and ranger direction without fuss. For how the holes actually play, see our guide on how to play the Wentworth West and the full Wentworth West course profile.

Wentworth dress code questions

What is the dress code at Wentworth?

On the Wentworth courses the standard is smart golf attire: a collared shirt, tailored trousers or shorts worn with appropriate socks, and golf shoes. Blue denim, sleeveless shirts and collarless tee shirts are not permitted. In the clubhouse the dress is smart casual, with some dining areas requiring a jacket for gentlemen, and day shoes must be worn inside, with golf shoes confined to the bag drop, locker room and pro shop. Staff and course rangers are authorized to approach anyone not meeting the standard, so dress to it from the car park. Always confirm the current dress code directly before booking.

Can you wear shorts at Wentworth?

Yes. Tailored shorts are permitted on the Wentworth courses, worn with appropriate socks and a collared golf shirt. Beach and cargo styles are not in keeping with the standard. Given the leafy Surrey setting and English weather, keep a waterproof and a warm layer in the bag whatever the forecast, and remember the clubhouse expects smart casual and day shoes once you come off the course.

Are jeans allowed at Wentworth?

Blue denim is not permitted on the Wentworth courses. The clubhouse is smart casual rather than strictly no denim, but the safe approach for a visit is to leave the jeans behind and wear tailored trousers throughout, since some dining areas also ask gentlemen for a jacket. Always confirm the current clubhouse and course dress rules directly with the club before your visit.

Can anyone play Wentworth?

Wentworth is a private members club, but visitor tee times on the courses, including the famous West, are available at certain times, typically midweek and outside member priority, and are best secured in advance. The West Course hosts the BMW PGA Championship and is in high demand, so book early once your dates are firm, or have a planner arrange the round as part of a wider Surrey heathland trip. Always confirm current visitor access and any handicap requirement directly with the club.
