Golf Dress Code and Course Rules in Lancashire

Royal Lytham publishes one of the most precise dress codes in championship golf, down to the sock length worn with tailored shorts and where in the clubhouse a hat may be worn. Get it right and the day feels effortless; get it wrong and you are shopping in the pro shop before breakfast. Here are the rules at Lytham and its neighbors, verified from the clubs.

Royal Lytham sets the standard

On the course at Royal Lytham, the published rules are specific and worth packing for. Conventional golfing attire and golf shoes are required; trousers and shorts must be tailored, and tailored shorts must be worn with long socks or short white ankle socks. Men's shirts need sleeves and a collar or polo neck, and they stay tucked in. If you wear a cap, the peak faces forward. The club's list of what does not count as golf attire is explicit: denim jeans, tracksuits, trousers or shorts with external pockets, kit from other sports, and anything ripped or frayed.

Inside the clubhouse the gradient climbs. Neat golf attire is fine downstairs, but shorts may not be worn upstairs, golf shoes and other sports shoes may not be worn upstairs, and hats and outerwear come off upstairs too, with Panama hats the preferred headwear on the balcony. For evening dinner, men wear a jacket and tie, and women a jacket with shirt or blouse, or a dress. None of this is decoration; the dining room above the 18th green is one of golf's great rooms, and dressing for it is part of the day.

Phones, music and the quiet rules

Royal Lytham's phone policy is stricter than most visitors expect: calls are permitted only in the locker rooms, the telephone booth and the car park, except in an emergency. Devices may be used silently elsewhere for scoring or yardages, but watching video is not permitted outside the practice ground, and music or headphones are banned everywhere on the premises, course and car park included. Brief the group before arrival; it is the rule visitors break by accident.

Handicaps, tees and getting it right

The paperwork

Royal Lytham advises that handicaps be no higher than 21 for men and 30 for women, with a certificate from your home club, and it steers visiting parties to the green tees for men and orange for women; take the advice, because from the back markers this is, in Bernard Darwin's phrase, a beast of a course, but a just beast. Pack once, play everywhere

The practical kit list for the Fylde coast: tailored trousers, a couple of collared shirts, white ankle socks if you run hot, soft spikes, and one jacket and tie for the Lytham dining room. That wardrobe clears every door in the county, from the championship clubs to the friendlier links like West Lancashire further down the coast. Our guide to dress codes at the world's top courses sets the same standard globally, and the Lancashire golf packages page turns the rules into a booked trip.

Lancashire dress code questions

What is the dress code at Royal Lytham?

On the course: conventional golf attire with golf shoes, tailored trousers or tailored shorts with long socks or short white ankle socks, sleeved and collared shirts tucked in, and cap peaks facing forward. Denim, tracksuits, trousers or shorts with external pockets, other sports kit and ripped clothing are all excluded. In the clubhouse, shorts and golf shoes may not be worn upstairs, and evening dinner requires a jacket and tie for men and a jacket, shirt or blouse, or dress for women.

Do I need a handicap certificate to play in Lancashire?

At Royal Lytham, yes in practice: the club advises handicaps no higher than 21 for men and 30 for women, with a certificate from your home club, and recommends the green tees for men and orange for women. St Annes Old Links and most neighboring clubs are more relaxed but still expect evidence of competent golf for links tee times. Carry your WHS details and the question never arises.

Can I use my phone at Royal Lytham?

Only carefully. Calls are restricted to the locker rooms, the telephone booth and the car park except in emergencies. Phones may be used silently for scoring and yardages on the course, but video is not permitted outside the practice area, and music and headphones are banned everywhere on club premises, including the course and car park.

Are jeans acceptable at Lancashire golf clubs?

No. Royal Lytham lists denim jeans among the items that are not conventional golfing attire, and St Annes Old Links states plainly that denim jeans and collarless shirts are not acceptable. The safe Lancashire wardrobe is tailored trousers, a collared shirt and soft spikes, with a jacket and tie packed if you intend to eat upstairs at Lytham.
