Dress Codes at the World's Top Golf Courses

Nothing spoils a bucket list round faster than being turned away at the first tee or the clubhouse door. The good news is that the standard at the world's great courses is consistent and easy to meet: a collared shirt, tailored trousers or shorts, proper golf shoes and no denim. Here is exactly what to pack, course by course, with a quick reference table for St Andrews, Muirfield, Augusta, Pebble Beach and the rest, so you arrive dressed correctly every time.

The universal standard

Across almost every leading course in the world the on course dress code is the same, and once you know it you can play anywhere with confidence. For men that means a collared golf shirt, either a polo or a roll neck where the weather demands it, with tailored golf trousers or tailored knee length shorts worn with golf socks. For women it means a collared or sleeved golf top with tailored trousers, a skort or a tailored skirt. Everyone needs proper soft spike golf shoes. That is the whole of it, and it will get you onto the first tee at the Old Course, at Pebble Beach, at Valderrama and at every great club in between.

What is not allowed is just as consistent. Denim of any colour, including jeans and denim shorts, is out almost everywhere, as are cargo trousers and cargo shorts, tracksuits and athletic or gym wear, T shirts and collarless tops, football and rugby shirts, and at many clubs ankle socks worn with shorts. Most clubs ask that shirts be tucked in and that caps be worn the right way round and removed indoors. Dress to this standard and you will never be the golfer having an awkward conversation by the pro shop.

Dress codes at the great courses, at a glance

What to pack so you are never caught out

Build your golf wardrobe around the universal standard and you are covered everywhere. Pack three or four collared golf shirts, two pairs of tailored golf trousers and a pair of tailored shorts for warm days, golf socks including a longer pair for clubs that ask for them with shorts, and a single pair of clean soft spike golf shoes. Add waterproofs and a warm mid layer for the links, where the weather turns in minutes, and a smart belt. That kit will get you onto every great course in the world without a second glance.

For the clubhouse, the safe move at a traditional members club is to carry a sports jacket and a collared shirt you can tuck in, because some historic clubs still ask for a jacket, and at a few a tie, in the dining room and certain rooms. Resort and modern clubhouses are almost always smart casual, but denim and trainers can still be unwelcome in the evening. When you are unsure, the rule never fails: dress one notch smarter than you think you need to, and ask the club ahead of your visit.

Golf dress code questions

What is the standard dress code at top golf courses?

At almost every leading course the on course standard is the same: a collared golf shirt, tailored trousers or tailored knee length shorts, golf shoes and golf socks. Denim of any kind, cargo trousers and shorts, tracksuits, T shirts, athletic and gym wear, collarless shirts and football shirts are not allowed. Many clubs ask that shirts be tucked in and that caps be worn facing forward. When in doubt, dress smart and you will be welcome anywhere.

Can you wear shorts at the Old Course and other top links?

Yes, tailored knee length shorts worn with golf socks are accepted at St Andrews and at most of the great links and resort courses, weather permitting. The key is that the shorts are tailored, not cargo, sport or board shorts, and that they are worn with proper golf socks rather than ankle socks at clubs that specify it. A handful of traditional members clubs still prefer long trousers, so check the specific club before you travel.

Is denim allowed on golf courses?

At the world's top courses, no. Denim of any colour, including jeans and denim shorts, is prohibited on the course and usually in the clubhouse at traditional clubs. A small number of modern resort and pay and play courses now permit smart denim, but you should never assume it. Pack tailored golf trousers and shorts and leave the jeans for the evening, where many clubhouses still ask for smart casual rather than denim too.

Do you need a jacket and tie in golf clubhouses?

At some traditional members clubs, yes, in certain rooms and at certain times. Muirfield, for example, maintains jacket and tie traditions in parts of the clubhouse, particularly for lunch, and several historic clubs ask for smart dress beyond golf wear in the dining room and bar. Caps and hats should be removed indoors. Most resort and modern clubhouses are smart casual, but if you are playing a historic members club, pack a jacket to be safe and ask ahead.
