Golf Dress Code and Course Rules in Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire golf is old, proud and welcoming, in that order. Royal Aberdeen has been at it since 1780, Cruden Bay since 1899, and both will greet a properly dressed visitor like a member while quietly noting the handicap certificate and the state of your shoes. Here is exactly what to pack and how to behave at the great links north of the Granite City, from jacket and tie rooms to the dunes you must not climb.

The Aberdeenshire dress code, in short

The standard on every course a visitor travels for is recognizable golf attire: a collared golf shirt, tailored trousers or golf shorts, golf shoes, and outerwear made for the game. Royal Aberdeen publishes the most detailed code in the region and it is the one to pack to, because everything it bans is banned in spirit everywhere else: garments with slogans, trainers, sliders, denim of any brand or style, tracksuits, vests, football or other sports kits, cargo shorts, beachwear, non golf T shirts and dirty clothing all stay in the car.

The clubhouses carry their own rules. At Royal Aberdeen all headgear comes off at the door, golf shoes must be cleaned before entering, and while soft spikes are tolerated in most rooms, the Dining Room is jacket and tie, as is the Archie Simpson Lounge on Saturdays. Cruden Bay runs smart casual with no denim in the lounge or restaurant and no hats or collarless shirts indoors. Trump International asks simply for proper golf attire on the links and is relaxed in the clubhouse. Pack one collared shirt, one pair of chinos and one jacket for the week and every door in the county opens.

Handicap certificates and letters of introduction

Aberdeenshire still does paperwork. Royal Aberdeen asks visitors to carry a current handicap index and a letter of introduction from an accredited home club, and recommends the Balgownie links for golfers playing off 24 or better, a fair warning rather than a formality given the wind and the rough. Cruden Bay, Murcar Links and Trump International are lighter on documents, but a digital handicap record on your phone settles any conversation before it starts.

On course rules and links etiquette

Walking, trolleys and buggies

This is walking country. Trolleys are standard and available at every club, but buggies are scarce on the true links and generally reserved for golfers with a medical reason, so build your fitness plan around 36 holes on foot in a sea wind. Carry bags travel best through the Balgownie and Cruden Bay dunes, where some trolley routes close in wet winter spells. If anyone in your group needs a buggy, request it when you book, never on arrival.

Pace of play

Aberdeenshire members play fast and expect the same. Keep up with the group ahead rather than ahead of the group behind, be ready over the ball, and cap searches in the marram rough at a couple of minutes, because balls that miss these fairways are usually gone. Royal Aberdeen's old habit of morning foursomes survives for a reason: it is the quickest game in golf, and a visiting four ball that takes four and a half hours will feel the chill beyond the weather.

Care of the links and the weather

Replace divots on the fine fescue turf, rake the revetted bunkers and leave the rakes where you found them, and repair pitch marks even when the greens are too firm to show them. The dunes themselves are part of the deal: stay on marked paths between holes, keep out of roped or fenced areas, and never climb the faces, which are protected habitat at several clubs. Then respect the forecast. A benign morning can turn into a four club wind by the turn, so carry waterproofs every round, and if lightning arrives, head for the clubhouse without ceremony; honesty boxes and rain checks are handled with typical northeast fairness.

Aberdeenshire golf rules questions

What is the dress code at Royal Aberdeen?

Recognizable golf attire on the course: a collared golf shirt, tailored trousers or golf shorts, and golf shoes. Royal Aberdeen's published code rules out denim of any brand, trainers, sliders, tracksuits, vests, football and other sports kits, cargo shorts, beachwear, slogan garments and non golf T shirts. In the clubhouse all headgear comes off, shoes must be clean, and the Dining Room, plus the Archie Simpson Lounge on Saturdays, calls for jacket and tie.

Do I need a handicap certificate to play golf in Aberdeenshire?

At Royal Aberdeen, yes: visitors should bring a current handicap index and a letter of introduction from their home club, and the club recommends the Balgownie links for players of 24 or under. Cruden Bay, Trump International and Murcar Links are more relaxed about paperwork, but a sensible handicap and honest pace are expected everywhere. Carry proof of handicap in Scotland and you will never be caught out.

Can you wear shorts on Aberdeenshire golf courses?

Yes, tailored golf shorts are accepted at the main visitor courses, though the North Sea usually makes the decision for you: even in July the wind off the water keeps most golfers in trousers and a windproof layer. Cargo shorts, athletic shorts and football shorts are not acceptable anywhere that matters.

What rules matter most when playing links golf in Aberdeenshire?

Walking is the default, with trolleys standard and buggies limited and usually medical only, so pack light. Keep pace with the group ahead, play the ball as it lies on hard ground, replace divots on the fine links turf, and respect the dunes: many are protected and roped off. In the clubhouses, hats off indoors and smart casual with no denim is the safe standard.
