Buggies, Caddies and Etiquette in Texas Hill Country

From Barton Creek above Austin to the lake courses at Horseshoe Bay, the Hill Country is cart golf country: buggies come bundled into the green fee, walking is the exception, and the etiquette that matters is mostly about where the cart goes. Here is how it works, where a caddie can actually be found, and the habits that keep a visiting group welcome.

Why the Hill Country rides

Three reasons, and they compound. First, the land: these courses tumble over limestone ridges and creek canyons west of Austin and north of San Antonio, with long transfers between green and tee that were routed for carts from the day they were drawn. Second, the heat: from June into September afternoon temperatures regularly push past 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and walking 7,000 yards in it is a health decision, not a romantic one. Third, the economics: the resorts quote one golf rate that bundles the green fee, a shared buggy and usually the practice range, so riding is the default you have already paid for. As an indicative 2026 example, the Fazio Foothills rate at Omni Barton Creek runs around 275 US dollars with the shared cart and range included, always confirm directly before booking.

That does not mean walking is banned everywhere. Some clubs will let a fit twosome walk at twilight in the cooler months if they ask the pro shop first, and the municipal courses around Austin and San Antonio are friendlier to it. But if your picture of a golf trip is a carry bag and a caddie, point the plane at Scotland; if it is cold towels, a cooler on the back of the cart and 36 holes without blisters, the Hill Country is your place.

VenueWhat to expect
Omni Barton Creek, AustinFour courses led by Fazio Foothills and Fazio Canyons. Golf rate, around 275 dollars on Foothills, includes shared cart and range. Caddies are listed among the resort's services and can be arranged with advance notice, the closest thing to a true caddie program in the region
TPC San AntonioTwo courses at the JW Marriott Hill Country resort; the Oaks, by Greg Norman with Sergio Garcia consulting, hosts the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open. Access is for resort guests and members, carts standard; ask the golf shop about caddie availability when you book
Horseshoe Bay ResortThree Robert Trent Jones Sr courses on Lake LBJ: Slick Rock with its waterfall cart path at the 14th, tougher Ram Rock and Apple Rock. Cart included in the golf rate; afternoon twilight rates drop substantially and keep the cart, range balls and water
Boot Ranch, FredericksburgStrictly private Hal Sutton design of 7,250 yards. The club trains junior golfers in caddie service, so member and guest play can take a caddie. Visitors need a member host; see our Texas tee times guide
Austin and San Antonio daily fee golfLions Municipal, the Alamo City Golf Trail courses and the area's daily fee layouts welcome walkers at standard rates. The 90 degree rule is the norm; carts are an optional add on rather than bundled

The etiquette that actually matters

Learn the 90 degree rule

The local default, and on the San Antonio municipal trail it is always in effect: keep the cart on the path until you are level with your ball, turn 90 degrees, drive straight out, play, and come straight back. It exists because Hill Country turf lives a stressed life. Bermuda fairways over thin limestone soil burn under repeated tire traffic in summer drought, so the less grass you drive on, the better the course plays for everyone behind you. When the starter says cart path only, after a storm or in the worst heat, take it literally; flash flooding is real here and a buggy on a soaked creek bottom fairway leaves scars that last weeks.

Respect the heat protocol

Summer golf works here because the routine is honest: dawn or twilight tee times, a cooler topped up at every turn, and the cart's shade used between shots. Pace of play etiquette is part of it, a foursome that keeps up with the group ahead spends less time baking in the open. Most courses run drink carts and water stations; tipping the cart attendant a few dollars at the bag drop and the drink cart on each pass is standard Texas practice.

If you want a caddie, ask early

There is no caddie yard culture in central Texas. Barton Creek can arrange caddies with notice, TPC San Antonio's golf shop can advise on caddie availability for resort guests, and Boot Ranch's junior caddie program serves member play. In every case the request goes in when the tee time is booked, a week or more ahead, and the caddie fee and gratuity sit on top of the golf rate, in cash, paid directly. For dress expectations to go with it, see our Texas dress code guide; collared shirts and proper golf shoes are assumed at every venue above.

Hill Country buggy and caddie questions

Can you walk the Hill Country resort courses?

Mostly no, and rarely comfortably. Green fees at the resorts are quoted with a shared cart included, the terrain rolls hard over limestone with long green to tee transfers, and summer heat regularly passes 100 degrees Fahrenheit. A few clubs accommodate walkers at quiet times if you ask the pro shop, but plan every round around a buggy.

Are there caddies in the Hill Country?

A few places, by advance request only. Omni Barton Creek lists caddies among its services and can arrange one with notice, TPC San Antonio's golf shop can advise resort guests on caddie availability, and the private Boot Ranch trains juniors in caddie service for member play. Request a looper when you book, not when you arrive.

What is the 90 degree rule?

Keep the cart on the path until level with your ball, turn 90 degrees, drive straight to it, play, and return the same way. It limits turf damage while sparing your legs, and around San Antonio it is standard practice. Courses move to full cart path only in summer stress or after storms.

What does a buggy cost?

Usually nothing extra at the resorts: the quoted golf rate includes a shared cart, and as an indicative 2026 example Barton Creek's Fazio Foothills rate of around 275 US dollars covers green fee, cart and range. Twilight rates, often steeply discounted from early afternoon, keep the cart too. Always confirm directly before booking.
