Best Time to Book a Golf Holiday for Value

There are two timing decisions on any golf trip: when you book, and when you travel. Get both right and you can cut the cost of the same holiday by a third or more. The short version is book six to nine months out and travel in the shoulder season on weekdays. Here is exactly how to time it, with a month by month value guide.

The short answer

Value on a golf holiday comes from travelling just outside the peak and booking far enough ahead to lock those rates. For most destinations the sweet spot is the shoulder season, the weeks either side of the busiest, most expensive window, when the weather still holds but the prices have not yet climbed. Book that window six to nine months in advance, travel midweek rather than over a weekend, and you capture the best of both: good conditions and soft prices.

The peak is different for every destination. In the Mediterranean it is the mild winter; in the desert and the tropics it is the dry, cooler months; in the great links countries it is high summer. The trick is to aim for the edges of that peak rather than its heart. Below is how the value moves through the year, and the windows that consistently reward a value minded golfer.

Five ways to time it for value

Tactic 1

Aim for the shoulder

Travel in the weeks either side of peak. You keep most of the weather and shed a large share of the cost, often the single biggest saving available.

Tactic 2

Book 6 to 9 months out

Far enough ahead to secure shoulder rates and the lodging you want, not so far that deposits sit idle. Marquee, balloted courses need a longer run up.

Tactic 3

Go midweek

Monday to Thursday golf is frequently cheaper, quieter and easier to book than weekends, and midweek flights tend to be lower too.

Tactic 4

Bundle as a group

For a multi course trip, a package holds negotiated green fees and room rates and bundles transfers, which usually beats booking each piece alone.

Tactic 5

Stay flexible by a week

If your dates can move by a week, you can dodge a school holiday, an event or a tournament that spikes local prices and availability.

Once you know your window, the planning sequence in our step by step buddies trip guide takes it from there. Prefer a hand? Use our trip enquiry and we will cost the value window for you.

Golf holiday value questions

How far in advance should you book a golf holiday for the best value?

Six to nine months out is the value sweet spot for most golf holidays. It is early enough to secure shoulder season rates, group lodging and the tee times you want, but not so far out that deposits are tied up for a year. Marquee courses with ballots or limited visitor days should be targeted twelve months or more ahead.

What is the cheapest time to take a golf holiday?

The shoulder seasons either side of peak are where value lives: spring and late autumn in the Mediterranean, the green season in the desert and the tropics, and weekdays rather than weekends almost everywhere. You trade a small amount of weather certainty for green fees and lodging that can be a fraction of peak rates.

Is it cheaper to book a golf package or arrange it yourself?

For a single round, booking direct is often simplest. For a multi course group trip, a package or a planner usually wins on price and effort: operators hold negotiated green fees and room rates, bundle transfers, and absorb the admin. The value is greatest for larger groups and longer stays.

Should you book golf holidays on weekdays or weekends?

Weekdays, almost always. Green fees are frequently lower Monday to Thursday, the courses are quieter, and tee times are easier to secure. A trip that travels midweek rather than over a weekend can save meaningfully on both golf and flights.
